Elizabeth: The Golden Age nearly reached the top five with $5.79 million on 1579 screens in 12 markets for a total of $21.80 million. DVD Sales - Transformers Change the Home Market

There were six new releases on this week's sales chart, including the number one film of the week, The Transformers. That DVD sold 5.09 million units for opening week sales of $117.01 million, which was the best opening on the home market this year in terms of raw dollars. DVD Charts - Number One for 23

There was a close race on the DVD Sales Chart this week, with The Number 23 topping Zodiac 387,000 units to 352,000 units sold. Premonition fell to third place with 190,000 units sold and 791,000 in total. The Hills Have Eyes 2 placed third with 134,000 units sold for the week and 536,000 in total. International Details - Harry Was Not the Only Film to Light Up the Charts

As expected, The Transformers fell to second place this week, what wasn't expected was how well it held on. The film was down a mere 23% to $36.13 million on 3667 screens in 31 markets for a total of $146.66 million internationally. The film opened in China with a record-setting $12.6 million on 300 screens over the first five days while it earned $498,000 on 71 in Greece and $258,000 from 28 in Israel. The film's best market so far has been South Korea where it has taken in $39.52 million in three weeks, including $5.76 million on 540 screens this past weekend. This is a record for a non-South Korean film and an unexpectedly strong performance. Additionally, the film has yet to open in a number of major markets including the U.K., Japan, France, and Mexico and should hit $300 million internationally and $600 million worldwide, if not more. International Details - Pirates Still Have Some Fight Left in Them

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End remained in sixth place with $8.94 million on 5442 screens in 101 markets for a total of $624.93 million. Internationally the film is in fifth place all-time and should top Dead Man's Chest shortly. Worldwide, it is also in fifth place but Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone's $974.56 million seems safe. As for At World's End's individual markets, the U.K. is still ahead of Japan $80.06 million to $77.58 million. However, Japan is catching up $2.28 million on 674 screens compared to just $738,000 on 357 in the U.K. At this pace Japan will need just two weeks to become the film's biggest draw. More...

International Details - Spidey Swings into the Sunset

Spider-Man 3 fell out of the top five for the first time during its run, but since it has already hit $500 million internationally and is closing in on $900 million worldwide, this is hardly a reason to panic. Over the weekend the film added $3.02 million on 3914 screens in 65 markets for a total of $543.87 million, putting it in 11th place all time, just behind Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Rings. Worldwide the film had $873.88 million at the end of the weekend, which means it also places 11th on that all-time chart, but will top Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets before long. More...

It's another slow week for DVDs, but this is good news in a sense as it gives me more time to do spotlight reviews -- seven of them in total. 300 returned to the international chart this week thanks entirely to its opening in Japan. In that market, the film opened in second place with $2.71 million on 452 screens over the weekend and $3.39 million including last week's premiere in Tokyo. International Details - Box Office Broken

With no worldwide opening this weekend, several studios tried to open / expand smaller films hoping to take advantage of the lull. Despite this influx of competition, Fracture was able to hold strong dipping just one place with sixth with $2.25 million on 1018 screens in 16 markets for a total of $22.33 million internationally. The film wasn't able to top $1 million in any single market, but came closest in France with $671,000 over the weekend for a $7.20 million running total. More...

International Details - Spidey Sinks to Second but Still Reaches Milestones

Spider-Man 3 earned a comfortable second place earning almost as much as the rest of the films on this list with $21.07 million on 10,365 screens in 76 markets for a total of $501.00 million. It is only the 14th film to reach that milestone while it became the 16th film to top $800 million worldwide and has already climbed into 14th place overall. The U.K. regained the lead as the best market for the film adding $2.58 million on 460 screens for a total of $61.09 million. Japan took in $2.36 million on 630 screens while France made $2.31 million on 866 screens as the only other two markets to top $2 million over the weekend and the film now has $47.79 million and $48.55 million respectively. International Details - Bean Takes a Holiday from the Top Five

Mr. Bean's Holiday fell one spot out of the top five this weekend despite showing some significant growth. The film did have a few openings, including a third place $165,000 debut on 56 screens in Turkey, but its biggest market was Germany where it grew 44% to $651,000 on 577 screens for the weekend and $22.52 million in total. Overall the film added $3.47 million on 2634 screens in 43 markets for a total of $176.19 million internationally with debuts in South Korea, Japan, and China, yet to come, (and of course it doesn't open here till August). International Details - Slow Week Outside of Spider-Man

The competition is still being pushed down by Spider-Man 3 and although there were half a dozen new releases to chart this week, it was still impossible to fill out a top 30 chart with any real details. For instance, Next had no major openings and its best midlevel was a second place debut in Malaysia with $115,000 on 30 screens. International Top One - Spider-Man Spins a Worldwide Web

Spider-Man 3's performance on the international scene was truly amazing as it outpaced almost all expectations and beat earlier weekend estimates. The film earned $176.84 million overall on 16,711 screens in 75 markets and since its opening last Tuesday the film has already made $230.89 million. This means the film surpassed 300 in less than one week, to become the biggest international hit of the year, and should do the same on the worldwide chart by the weekend. More...

International Details - 300's Last Stab at Glory

300 was knocked out of the top five this week but still added $3.82 million on 3,537 screens in 52 markets for a total of $223.77 million. The film has yet to open in Japan, but that's about it at this point and there's little hope that the movie will hit any more milestones from now until then. International Details - Reaping the Rewards

The Reaping climbed into sixth place this past weekend with $5.98 million on 2634 screens in 39 markets for a total of just $20.38 million. The film had a couple respectable openings including South Korea where it made $1.17 million on 129 screens over the weekend and $1.34 million in total while it took in $335,000 in Brazil. However, in most markets the film stumbled, like in France where is placed seventh with $684,000 or the the U.K. where it placed eighth with $622,000 on 282 screens. The film debuted in ninth place in Australia, ($405,000 on 133 screens); in Russia, ($261,000 on 111); and in Germany, ($247,000 on 201). Mexico became the film's best market as it has pulled in $4.45 million in three weeks, including $589,000 on 350 screens this past weekend; this is just ahead of the $4.25 million the film has earned in Spain, but it only managed $334,000 on 299 screens this past weekend and will quickly disappear there. Sunshine climbed into sixth place with $5.20 million on 1866 screens in 30 markets for a total of $10.20 million. However, while it nearly doubled last week's opening, this was entirely due to the film's expansion. Its biggest market of the weekend was France where it placed fourth with $1.36 million on 339 screens while it placed eighth in its debut in Australia with just $611,000 on 161 screens. On the other hand, the film only managed $508,000 on 192 screens during its debut in Japan and while likely see a sharp drop-off next weekend given its weak per screen average. Wild Hogs had its best performance of its run so far climbing into sixth place with $3.33 million on 817 screens in 8 markets for a total of $18.43 million after a month of release. About half of that came from the film's number one debut in Mexico where it earned $1.33 million on 355 screens over the weekend and $1.67 million including previews while the film did reasonable business in Taiwan with $345,000 on 40. International Top Five - Bean Battles Spartans to a Draw

Mr. Bean's Holiday won the weekend race on the international charts. Maybe. It all depends on how you count previews.

Without last week's previews in the U.K. the film finished a very close second with $29.28 million, just behind 300's $30.26 million. Including previews, Bean topped the charts with $34.27 million on 3,085 screens in 26 markets for a total of $36.59 million. More...

International Details - Good Start for Martial Artist Mutants

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles started its international run this past weekend and just missed the top five on debut. It did manage $3.92 million on 1,004 screens in 8 markets over the weekend and $4.53 million including previews. Of this box office, nearly half of it came from a pair of third place openings in England ($1.27 million on 368 screens over the weekend and $1.86 million in total), and Australia ($379,000 on 58 screens). There was quite an international flavor on the charts this past weekend with five local hits charting, and one more just missing that mark. The best of these was Lubov Morkov, which opened in sixth place with $5.38 million on 492 screens in 4 markets over the weekend and $6.28 million in total. Persians Invade Movie Theaters

The weekend was rather predictable, with three of the top five landing within a rounding error of expectations and another finishing close enough to call it a victory. ... OK, I got skunked on 300, but I think I know why. That film's record-breaking opening helped push the overall box office to $153 million over the weekend, up 23% from last weekend and 39% from the same weekend last year. As for the yearly trend, we have seeing a lot more massive hits coming out this year than expected. This could be a portent of things to come, and that would mean we might have more than a dozen films top $200 million this summer alone. More...

Music and Lyrics remained in sixth place with $5.64 million on 1645 screens in 18 markets for a total of $32.01 million internationally. The film disappointed domestically, but it appears to be making up for that softness on the international scene. The film's best opening of the weekend came from South Korea where it placed second with $2.06 million on 144 screens while it also grabbed second place in Brazil with $490,000 on 140. Holdovers were led by the U.K. where the film earned $1.09 million on 364 screens during its fourth week of release for a total of $15.71 million in that market alone. 300 Marches into Theaters

One of the most talked about March movies opens this weekend, but there are some concerns regarding 300's ability to turn this talk into box office dollars. It was a record-breaking President's Day weekend as 2007 produced it first blockbuster. Overall, total box office hit $158 million from Friday to Sunday, $188 million including Monday. That 3-day figure represents a 40% increase over last week and 22% over the same weekend last year. In addition, the 4-day portion was 20% higher than last year. It's President's Day today and that can only mean one thing, millions of Americans are celebrating by cutting down cherry trees and lying about it. I think. Truth be told, I'm not exactly sure what people do to celebrate President's Day. But I do know it will cause a slight delay in a couple of weekly columns. Ghost Rider made a fiery box office debut this weekend, according to studio estimates released on Sunday. Its $44.5 million opening makes it the new record holder for the best President's Day opening weekend, and if the estimate holds, it will record the 3rd-best February weekend (see Best February weekends).
