International Details - Spidey Swings into the Sunset

June 24, 2007

Spider-Man 3 fell out of the top five for the first time during its run, but since it has already hit $500 million internationally and is closing in on $900 million worldwide, this is hardly a reason to panic. Over the weekend the film added $3.02 million on 3914 screens in 65 markets for a total of $543.87 million, putting it in 11th place all time, just behind Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Rings. Worldwide the film had $873.88 million at the end of the weekend, which means it also places 11th on that all-time chart, but will top Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets before long.

  • Jhoom Barabar Jhoom started its international run in seventh place with $2.82 million on 542 screens in 17 markets. This is inline with recent history for these types of films, but its reported larger than average budget will mean it will have trouble showing a profit.
  • Hostel: Part II shot up the charts thanks to a pair of fourth place openings in major markets. However, to earn just $836,000 on 271 screens in Horror friendly Spain is not a good sign, and it was hardly better in Germany at 724,630 on 214. Overall the film made $2.03 million on 712 screens in 12 markets for a total of $2.66 million.
  • Death Proof remained in ninth place with $1.97 million on 999 screens in 15 markets for a total of $8.61 million. The film is proving popular in France after adding $891,000 on 343 screens to its total of $2.76 million in that market alone. The film didn't open as fast as it did here, but held on better and could match its domestic run, if you take into account the relative size of the two markets, and that's only the first half of the movie.
  • Maiko Haaaan!!! opened in second place in Japan with $1.89 million on 287 screens, which is above the $5000 per screen average that historically has separated the hits from the misses.
  • Conversations with My Gardener held on strong in France adding $1.62 million on 530 screens over the weekend for a total of $4.30 million after two.
  • 300 fell from 6th to 12th with $1.50 million on 515 screens in 6 markets for a total of $240.64 million. All but a rounding error of that came from Japan where it has earned $7.19 million after three weeks.
  • Fracture landed in 13th place with $1.47 million on 1074 screens in 16 markets for a total of $30.79 million after two months of release. The film is closing in on its domestic total, but that's a long way from profitability. Hopefully its strong reviews will result in a better run on the home market.
  • Wild Hogs returned to the charts thanks mostly to a fourth place, $1.06 million opening on 327 screens in France. Overall the film added $1.42 million on 954 screens in 19 markets for a $80.71 million international total. This is a far cry from what it earned domestically, but it has already started earning a profit, so everyone involved should be happy.
  • Sivaji debuted in 15th place with $1.32 million on 358 screens in 15 markets, including a ninth place, $333,000 opening on 12 screens in the U.K. for the best per screen average in that market over the weekend.
  • Vacancy start its international run in earnest this weekend with a fourth place opening in the U.K. with $1.12 on 288. Adding in holdovers and the film made $1.14 million on 318 screens over the weekend for a very early total of $1.71 million.
  • Hwang Jin-yi fell to third place in South Korea and 17th overall with $1.13 million on 424 screens over the weekend for a total of $7.03 million.
  • Surf's Up fell nearly 50% this past weekend to $1.08 million on 400 screens in 2 markets for a total of $4.41 million. However, given the film's two markets are Russia and the Ukraine, this is not a surprisingly high drop-off, but it is also not a great sign either.
  • Bridge to Terabithia returned to the charts with $1.05 million on 668 screens in 10 markets over the weekend for a total of $41.82 million. This includes a fourth place opening in Australia where it earned $688,000 on 226 screens over the weekend and $967,000 in total.
One final note, on Wednesday's Top Five I forgot to mention Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End's opening in China. China is one of those markets that tends to report late and with mixed signals. For instance, At World's End may have earned $5.9 million or $6.8 million on 879 screens, either way it is one of the biggest openings there this year, (Spider-Man 3 tops that chart with $7.9 million), but a little disappointing nonetheless.
