Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Full financial estimates for this film, including domestic and international box office, video sales, video rentals, TV and ancillary revenue are available through our research services. For more information, please contact us at research@the-numbers.com.

DVD Sales: Dark Knight and Up Share Black Friday Honors

December 12th, 2009

Black Friday sales gave a decidedly retro look to the DVD sales chart for the week ending November 29. All major retailers were offering deeply discounted prices of catalog titles, including $4 deals at Target for Elf, Sex and the City and Forgetting Sarah Marshall, among others, and Best Buy offering Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and Forgetting Sarah Marshall at the same price. Walmart wasn't going to be outdone though, and offered some DVD titles, including Hellboy 2, Mummy 3, I am Legend and Casino Royale in limited quantities at just $2. The real champion of the bargain basement, however, was The Dark Knight, which was available for $5 at Walmart, and $4 at both Target and Best Buy. With low, low prices, the unit volumes for the week were astronomical, but overall spending was actually down from 2008 thanks to the price cuts. More...

DVD Releases for November 24th, 2009

November 23rd, 2009

It's the week before Black Friday, which is widely reported as the busiest shopping day of the year. (It's not. Christmas Eve is the busiest shopping day of the year; however, on Christmas Eve a lot of the purchases are last minute food items.) If a studio wants its product to be part of Black Friday, this is the last Tuesday they can release the DVD or Blu-ray. Because of this, I'm a little surprised the week isn't busier than it is. The biggest release of the week is Angels & Demons, while there are a couple of Christmas releases that are also selling well. However, none of those come close to being the DVD Pick of the Week. Arguably the best of the best is Funny People, which isn't the best movie coming out this week, but it is a good movie and its Blu-ray is absolutely loaded. More...

International Details - Harry Leaves Competition in the Cold

July 26th, 2009

Ice Age - Dawn of the Dinosaurs was pushed into second place by The Half-Blood Prince, but it became the biggest international hit of the year topping Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen. Over the weekend the film added $61.90 million on 11,089 screens in 102 markets for a total of $430.88 million internationally and $582.75 million Worldwide. It is possible that the film is already the biggest his in the franchise, but we won't know for sure till this weekend's numbers are released. More...

International Details - Transformers Involved in Change on Top

July 12th, 2009

Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen fell to second place with $57.50 million on 9158 screens in 61 markets for a total of $301.64 million. This puts the film less than $100 million behind the original internationally, which is a lead that won't last long. The film's biggest market of the weekend was South Korea where it placed first adding $7.76 million on 1076 screens to its total of $27.81 million. It also was impressive in China adding $5.2 million on 1009 screens for a total of $41.6 million, while it remained in first place in Australia with $4.95 million on 456 screens over the weekend and $21.51 million after two, and in Italy with $1.39 million on 565 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.06 million, also after two. International Details - Hanging Out with Hangover

July 5th, 2009

The Hangover climbed into second place with $11.14 million on 2091 screens in 28 markets for a total of $47.81 million. This was actually 2% lower than last week's performance. Its only major market opening came from France where it placed second with $3.31 million on 251 screens, but that was for the full week. (This is still impressive.) In the U.K. it was down just 15% to $3.15 million on 425 screens over the weekend and $18.50 million after three. It is a couple of weeks away from overtaking Terminator Salvation in that market. Over in Australia it managed to dip just 30% to $1.80 million on 227 screens over the weekend for a total of $9.07 million. It will also top Terminator Salvation in this market, and could beat out Angels and Demons as well. Massive. On the other hand, I'm not sure the film will do as well in most non-English speaking markets, as comedy tends to be harder to translate into other cultures. More...

International Details - Terminating Another Milestone

June 28th, 2009

Terminator Salvation fell to second place with $18.94 million on 9263 screens in 71 markets over the weekend, for a total of $200.84 million internationally and $320.57 million worldwide. The film has been troubled by sharp drop-offs internationally, and that was certainly the case this past weekend, as it was down 65% in Japan. Japan. It was down 65% in Japan, which is a market known for its strong holds. It still added $3.72 million on 697 screens over the weekend for a total of $19.70 million after two, but that's a sharper decline than anticipated. More...

International details - Hangover Shows Potential Overseas

June 21st, 2009

Night at the Museum - Battle for the Smithsonian remained in second place adding a solid $18.53 million on 8300 screens in 67 markets for a total of $175.90 million. The film opened in first place in Mexico, no surprise there, but with $3.34 million on 1150 screens its per screen average is not that impressive and being booked on more than 1000 screens, you think the studio was expecting a bit more. The film did hang on better than most in South Korea down just 50% to $2.13 million on 576 screens over the weekend for a total of $7.57 million after two. It also added $1.77 million on 506 screens in the U.K. for a total of $27.96 million, which is its best single market of its run so far. More...

International Details - Racing Towards Milestones

June 14th, 2009

Night at the Museum - Battle for the Smithsonian was pushed into second place in the international chart, but still added $27.88 million on 8350 screens in 66 markets while it lifted its international total to $149.55 million. The film opened in first place in South Korea with $4.33 million on 669 screens over the weekend and $4.75 million in total. It also remained in first place in China with $2.1 million on 818 screens over the weekend and $12.2 million in total, but that was a huge drop-off from last week. On the other hand, the film improved by 18% in the U.K. with $3.96 million on 509 screens over the weekend for a running tally of $25.31 million after three. That's better than the film's performance here, if you take into account the relative size of the two markets. The film opens in Mexico this weekend, and in Japan in August. It has likely reached $300 million worldwide already, and could make it all the way to $400 million before it is done. This is a drop-off from its predecessor, but the film is still well on its way to profitability and will get there before it reaches the lucrative home market. More...

Pixar Up, Box Office Down

June 1st, 2009

It was a close call, but 2009 wasn't able to keep pace with 2008, despite Up's better than expected opening. Overall, the box office generated $166 million, which was 6.0% lower than last weekend and 1.4% lower than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2009 still has an impressive 13.6% lead over 2008 at $4.11 billion to $3.61 billion, and even with weakness over the next few weeks, 2009 should maintain its lead for a while to come. Can the Box Office Remain Up?

May 28th, 2009

There are some people worrying that 2009's winning streak could be coming to an end. Not only was last weekend barely above 2008's pace, but this weekend could see an actual decline due to a number of factors. This includes a surprisingly strong film opening in first place last year, as well as weakness in one of the new releases from last week. Up should carry its weight, but it might not be enough. International Top of the Chart - Angels Shine in Back-to-Back Wins

May 28th, 2009

For the first time this summer, we didn't have a new number one film on the international chart, as Angels and Demons repeated as champion. It was able to do this after earning $58.43 million on 11,013 screens in 74 markets for a total of $196.72 million. This is more than it will make during its entire domestic run, but it is nearly 40% lower than its predecessor had earned at this point in its run. This is similar to the franchise's decline domestically, but it is hard to call that good news. "It's not doing any worse internationally than it is doing domestically." That's slim praise indeed. Museum Terminates the Competition

May 26th, 2009

Two new releases opened over Memorial Day long weekend, and while neither was able to compete with last year's champion, their combined total helped the box office grow. Over the three-day period, there were $176 million in ticket sales, which was 28% more than last weekend and 2.4% more than the same weekend last year. Over four days, the box office brought in $222 million, which was 1.2% more than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2009 has earned $3.90 billion, which is 14.4% higher than last year's pace of $3.41 billion. More...

Terminator Battles for Top Spot

May 22nd, 2009

For the first time this summer, we have two new releases battling for number one on the box office chart. This is causing quite a bit of debate over which film will take top spot; in fact, many think the two films will trade off first place over the weekend. Will this competition drive ticket sales enough for the market to keep pace with last year? Well, there's almost no chance any film this year will top Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the new films should do so collectively. And with better holdovers than this time last year, the overall box office could still show growth over the weekend. More...

International Top of the Chart - Angels Fly High Internationally

May 20th, 2009

Thanks to the Victoria Day holiday, we are working with studio estimates for a lot of the international numbers. However, we know more than enough details about the number one film. (I'm a little more concerned that the rest of the multi-million dollar films won't be known by Sunday.) That number one film was Angels and Demons, which is really living up to the comparisons to Prince Caspian. Domestically the film struggled to match the low end of lowered expectations domestically, but internationally the film shined. It had the biggest weekend of the year with $104.3 million on 10,468 screens in 96 markets, and it reportedly opening in first place in all of them. This was significantly lower than the $152.45 million The Da Vinci Code opened with in 2006, on the other hand. This movie will still make a profit, will still easily make a profit, and the studio will be looking to turn the franchise into a trilogy. However, I don't think it will go beyond that. More...

It is Summertime on the Per Theater Chart

May 20th, 2009

L'Heure D'Ete, which literally means Summer Time, reigned on top of the Per Theater Chart this weekend with an average of $24,742 in two theaters. It was also one of five films to reach $10,000, which is a sign that summer has truly begun. Second place went to The Brothers Bloom with an average of $22,600, and that is enough to suggest some potential to expand. Angels and Demons opened in first place overall and in third place on this chart with an average of $13,100. Not Forgotten was not far behind, earning an average of $11,192 in three theaters. Finally, Star Trek managed to remain in the $10,000 club for the second weekend in a row, which is very rare for a wide release these days, earning an sophomore average of $11,149. More...

Weekend Box Office Ends Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell

May 18th, 2009

There were mixed results at the weekend box office as Angels and Demons missed the low end of most analysts' expectations, which led to an 8% decline in box office numbers from last weekend. However, at $137 million, it was up 4.2% from the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2009 has brought in $3.62 billion compared to last year's pace of $3.13 billion, which is an increase of close to 16%. More...

Weekend Estimates: Angels and Demons Makes Modest Start

May 17th, 2009

After a string of box office hits in recent weeks, Angels & Demons made a more modest debut over the weekend, according to studio estimates. The sequel to The Da Vinci Code opened with an estimated $48 million, almost $30 million less than its predecessor, and fell short of most predictions. While international numbers and home market sales will most likely make the movie modestly profitable in the long run, the early signs are that it might be the end of the fledgling franchise. Curiously, this weekend last year saw a similar performance from Prince Caspian, which put a temporary hold on the Narnia franchise. (Next year's release this weekend is currently Shrek Goes Fourth, by the way.) More...

Summer Looks to Continue its Angelic Run

May 15th, 2009

Summer looks to go three for three with the release of Angels and Demons. On the one hand, so far 2009 has been amazing at the box office with almost no movie really faltering. On the other hand, the original did not impress critics and that could hurt this film's run. That said, this time last year was a little weaker than expected as Prince Caspian stumbled out of the gate. More...

Contest - The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

May 8th, 2009

Another week, another potential monster hit. This time it is Angels & Demons, and to celebrate, it is the target film in this week's box office prediction contest. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button on DVD and Inside the Third Reich on DVD. Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will also win a copy of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button on DVD, as well as America Betrayed on DVD. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay! More...

2009 Preview: May

May 1st, 2009

Last May was strong with two films that cracked $300 million at the box office. This May we might not have any movies reach that milestone. Then again, there are six films that have a shot to reach $200 million. I'm not saying all of them will get there, but I would be surprised if at least two of them don't get there, while all six should reach at least $100 million, which is two more than the same month last year. There are also a few midlevel hits in the waiting, as a few limited releases of note. This latter category includes The Brothers Bloom, Departures, and Pontypool. More...

DVD Rentals: New Releases are Angelic

More...

May 8th, 2009

Another week, another potential monster hit. This time it is Angels & Demons, and to celebrate, it is the target film in this week's box office prediction contest. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office of Angels & Demons.

More...
