International Details - Hanging Out with Hangover
July 5, 2009
The top film on the international scene was published on Wednesday and can be found here.
The Hangover climbed into second place with $11.14 million on 2091 screens in 28 markets for a total of $47.81 million. This was actually 2% lower than last week's performance. Its only major market opening came from France where it placed second with $3.31 million on 251 screens, but that was for the full week. (This is still impressive.) In the U.K. it was down just 15% to $3.15 million on 425 screens over the weekend and $18.50 million after three. It is a couple of weeks away from overtaking Terminator Salvation in that market. Over in Australia it managed to dip just 30% to $1.80 million on 227 screens over the weekend for a total of $9.07 million. It will also top Terminator Salvation in this market, and could beat out Angels and Demons as well. Massive. On the other hand, I'm not sure the film will do as well in most non-English speaking markets, as comedy tends to be harder to translate into other cultures.
- Terminator Salvation saw its weekend haul slashed in half to $9.04 million on 6851 screens in 68 markets for a total of $217.88 million internationally and $339.81 million worldwide. With sharp declines and few markets left to open in, we will see a quick exit from this list over the next few weeks.
- The Proposal climbed a spot to fourth with $7.20 million on 1379 screens in 15 markets for a total of $22.08 million. The film had a few openings this past weekend, but nothing major. Its biggest market was Sweden where it placed second with $172,000 on 53 markets over the weekend and $372,000 in total. Its biggest market overall was Australia, where it added $1.89 million on 280 screens over the weekend to its running tally of $6.18 million after two.
- Night at the Museum - Battle for the Smithsonian hit a major milestone reaching $200 million internationally and now sits at $202.43 overseas and $365.83 million worldwide. This includes $5.60 million on 5800 screens in 62 markets this past weekend, but that was down more than 50% from the weekend before that. And with its next opening, Japan, more than a month away, it will likely fall off the chart before long.
- Evangelion: You Can (Not) Advance opened in sixth place internationally and in first place in in Japan with $5.38 million on just 120 screens. With a massive $44,816 per screen average, this film should expand and have long, long legs.
- Angels and Demons was down a spot to seventh with $4.72 million on 4128 screens in 69 markets for a total of $337.06 million internationally and $467.33 million worldwide. As of the end of last weekend, it was still tops in both categories for the year, but that's likely no longer true. We will know as soon as final numbers are released for this weekend.
- Up was down a spot to eighth with $4.41 million on 1660 screens in 14 markets for a total of $46.80 million. No new openings this week left the film coasting on holdovers, but it did add $1.07 million on 571 screens over the weekend in Mexico for a total of $12.38 million after four.
- Rookies was pushed to second place in Japan, again, and was down to ninth place internationally with $4.35 million on 428 screens over the weekend for a total of $71.15 million after a month of release.
- State of Play landed in tenth place with $3.85 million on 1474 screens in 35 markets for a total of $43.80 million. The film did have one of its best openings so far pulling in $2.49 million on 394 screens in France, but that was for the full week and it was only enough for third place.
- New York just missed the top ten during its debut on the international charts with $3.73 million on 871 screens in 15 markets. A few years ago this would have been disappointing for an Indian film, but it is a blockbuster compared to most such films that have come out this past year or so.
- Hannah Montana the Movie slipped out of the top ten with $2.77 million on 2018 screens in 26 markets for a total of $55.61 million. The film struggled in Australia landing in fourth place with $795,000 on 136 screens over the weekend for a total of $1.10 million; however, the competition was strong and its results were not bad. Films aimed at this target demographic tend to do poorly internationally, but for the most part, this movie has bucked that trend.
- Year One reached the chart for the first time with $2.35 million on 576 screens in 5 markets over the weekend for a total of $4.39 million after two. The film had a respectable third place opening in the U.K. with $1.62 million on 382 screens. It also added $716,000 on 185 screens over the weekend in Australia for a total of $2.69 million after two.
- A Chronicle Of Stones was the final $2 million movie as the film added $2.24 million on 308 screens in Japan to its total of $9.42 million after two.
There were also a few other films that missed the $2 million mark, but still were of note including...
- My Sister's Keeper, which opened in 15th place with $1.96 million on 567 screens in 3 markets. In the U.K. the film earned $1.53 million on 355 screens for fourth place, but it failed to connect in Mexico with just $353,000 on 199 screens.
- Coraline fell out of the $2 million club with $1.72 million on 1354 screens in 26 markets for a total of $36.32 million.
- Finally, we get to Ice Age - Dawn of the Dinosaurs, which debuted in 17th place with $1.58 million on 176 screens in just 2 markets. This is basically previews for this weekend's worldwide debut.
