International Details - Racing Towards Milestones

June 14, 2009

The top film on the international scene was published on Thursday and can be found here.

Night at the Museum - Battle for the Smithsonian was pushed into second place in the international chart, but still added $27.88 million on 8350 screens in 66 markets while it lifted its international total to $149.55 million. The film opened in first place in South Korea with $4.33 million on 669 screens over the weekend and $4.75 million in total. It also remained in first place in China with $2.1 million on 818 screens over the weekend and $12.2 million in total, but that was a huge drop-off from last week. On the other hand, the film improved by 18% in the U.K. with $3.96 million on 509 screens over the weekend for a running tally of $25.31 million after three. That's better than the film's performance here, if you take into account the relative size of the two markets. The film opens in Mexico this weekend, and in Japan in August. It has likely reached $300 million worldwide already, and could make it all the way to $400 million before it is done. This is a drop-off from its predecessor, but the film is still well on its way to profitability and will get there before it reaches the lucrative home market.

  • Angels and Demons is starting to shed screens, and markets, but it is still a powerhouse on the international scene. This past weekend the film added $22.23 million on 9162 screens in 74 markets lifting its total to $290.88 million internationally and $407.05 million worldwide. It became the first film of 2009 to reach $400 million globally, while it has likely reached $300 million internationally as well. Its best market was Germany, where it slipped to second place with $3.60 million on 788 screens over the weekend for a total of $36.51 million after four weeks of release.
  • Rookies remained in first place in Japan and fourth place internationally with $10.67 million on 428 screens over the weekend for an outstanding total of $33.83 million after two.
  • Up climbed into the top five with $8.81 million on 1630 screens in 4 markets for a total of $14.68 million. This includes a first place, $3.59 million opening on 799 screens over the weekend in Mexico, giving the film $3.94 million there in total. It also held on extremely well in Russia where it added $2.64 million on 542 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.31 million. That's it for major markets till the end of July when it debuts in France, while it doesn't end its run till mid-December in Japan.
  • Last week Hannah Montana the Movie fell from sixth to twelfth. This week it rose from twelfth to sixth. Strange. It was aided by a third place, $2.48 million opening on 504 screens over the weekend in Germany, while it now has $3.81 million in that market. Overall the film made $5.90 million on 2307 screens in 18 markets for a total of $42.35 million internationally.
  • Star Trek slipped a spot to seventh with $5.82 million on 3653 screens in 51 markets for a total of $112.04 million internationally. The film struggled somewhat in its opening in Mexico with just $1.09 million on 440 screens, which was only enough for fourth place. However, it is a massive hit compared to the rest of the franchise and in the end it will make more internationally than all but one or two of the previous films made worldwide.
  • Drag Me To Hell climbed a spot to eighth with $3.67 million on 852 screens in 5 markets for a total of $10.00 million. The film opened in couple smaller markets in Southeast Asia, while it remained strong in the U.K. adding $2.11 million on 408 screens over the weekend for a total of $6.68 million after two.
  • The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo slipped back down to ninth place after earning $3.50 million on 1367 screens in 9 markets for a total of $55.36 million. I keep expecting to see an American release date announced, but a remake / re-adaptation is also possible.
  • Wolverine is shedding screens and markets at an accelerated pace falling to tenth spot with $3.39 million on 3717 screens in 47 markets for a total of $176.32 million. However, with Japan still ahead, it could make it to $200 million internationally.
  • Mother slipped to second place in South Korea and eleventh place internationally with $2.91 million on 573 screens over the weekend and $11.61 million in total.
  • State of Play added $2.53 million on 1174 screens in 29 markets to its total of $31.24 million internationally, which is closing it on its domestic total. The film opened in fifth place in Mexico with just $693,000 on 294 screens, while it added $1.01 million on 245 screens over the weekend in Australia for a total of $3.19 million after two.
  • The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past earned $2.27 million on 2388 screens in 20 markets for a total of $21.02 million.
  • Coraline returned to the chart with $2.12 million on 1148 screens in 25 markets for a total of $26.45 million. This includes a fifth place, $1.12 million opening on 341 screens in Spain, which is average for the film's run so far.
