DVD Sales - In Love with New Releases

May 20th, 2008

There were more than half a dozen new releases to chart this week, including to top two sellers, although none of them were particularly strong sellers. DVD Releases for May 6, 2008

May 6th, 2008

A slow week for top-of-the-line releases and there are no first-run, wide releases that look even remotely interesting enough to buy. There are a few limited releases and older releases to fill the gap. It was also a slow week for spotlight reviews, but that gave me a chance to completely catch up to all the screeners that arrived late. ... That is until the next batch of late arrivals show up. As for the best of the best, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead - Buy from Amazon is high on that list, except technically it was released a couple of weeks ago. Teeth - Buy from Amazon also impressed, but the extras are a little too light. For the DVD Pick of the Week, I'm going with The Passion of Greg the Bunny: Best of the Film Parodies - Volume 2. More...

Million Dollar Expansion for Blood

January 8th, 2008

There Will Be Blood expanded into 50 or so theaters over the weekend but was still able to come out on top of the per theater charts with an average of $25,905. Second place went to The Bucket List, which was down less than 3% to $20,424 and is poised to do very well in its wide expansion this weekend. Persepolis was the only other film to top $10,000 as it earned an average of $10,981 in 7 theaters. More...

Quartet of Oscar Contenders top the Per Theater Chart

December 12th, 2007

While many obvious Oscar bait films have failed to connect with critics or moviegoers this fall, Juno came practically out of nowhere to become a top contender. Not only has it earned 92% positive reviews, it also earned an average of $59,124 over the weekend in 7 theaters. And, since Wednesday, amassed an impressive $81,887. Atonement also did well enough to give it a serious shot at picking up some hardware with almost $800,000 in 32 theaters for an average of $24,901. Last week's duo of debuts held well with The Diving Bell and the Butterfly earning an average of $19,200 in 3 theaters during its second weekend of release. Meanwhile, The Savages expanded from 4 to 9 theaters while earning an average of $15,828. More...

Competition Takes a Dive against The Savages

December 5th, 2007

The Savages easily won the race on the per theater chart, scoring $150,000 in 4 theaters for an average of $37,965, and that's with a Wednesday opening. Over five days, the film earned an average of just over $46,000. The only other film to crack $10,000 was The Diving Bell and the Butterfly with $75,000 in three theaters for an average of $25,240. Starting Out on Top of the Per Theater Chart

November 27th, 2007

Starting Out in the Evening earned first place on the per theater chart with and average of $10,888 in seven theaters. This should be enough for it to expand over the holidays, but probably not enough to get noticed during award season. Margot at the Wedding was in second place with and average of $10,767 after increasing its theater count to 35. Finally, the re-re-re-release of The Polar Express added just over $150,000 in 15 theaters for an average of $10,024 and a total of $338,000 during its latest round in theaters. More...

Filling Up on Smaller Films

November 22nd, 2007

Award season should be heating up, but you couldn't really tell by the limited releases this week. I'm Not There looks promising, but there are too many question marks regarding its Oscar and box office chances. Starting Out in the Evening is the only other release with Oscar potential, but it will need to make a box office splash for voters to take notice. More...

2007 Preview: November

November 1st, 2007

After a horrible October, we finally get to November and the start of the holiday season. Just like the summer season doesn't officially begin until Memorial Day, the winter holiday season doesn't officially begin until the Thanksgiving long weekend. However, studios are trying to stretch the lucrative box office season as long as possible and the holiday-like releases start during the first weekend of the month. This means practically every weekend this month, there's at least one potential $100 million movie. There are also a few that might be Oscar contenders, although not as many as I had expected. In fact, so far Award Season has been particularly slow, but at least this means there should be more buzz surrounding the upcoming films as the race is wide open. More...
