DVD Sales - In Love with New Releases

May 20, 2008

There were more than half a dozen new releases to chart this week, including to top two sellers, although none of them were particularly strong sellers. P.S., I Love You led the way with sales of $11.88 million from 743,000 units while First Sunday placed second with 468,000 units sold and opening week revenue of $7.94 million. Last week's number one film, 27 Dresses fell to third place with 444,000 units sold and $7.10 million. So far it has generated $25.12 million in revenue from 1.55 million units, which is acceptable compared to its theatrical run. His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass sold 367,000 units this week to place fourth, but it also generated $8.07 million in revenue and placed second by that metric. After two weeks, the movie has sold 1.27 million units for $26.99 million, which is good compared to its theatrical run, but terrible compared to its production budget. Juno was just the opposite as it has managed to sell 2.33 million units for $40.24 million in sales (including 172,000 / $2.78 million this past weekend). This is amazing compared to its production budget, but lower than expected given its theatrical run. One has to assume the studio would prefer a Juno-like run as opposed to one similar to His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass.

Over Her Dead Body just missed the top five with 150,000 units for sales of $3.00 million during its first week of release. Meanwhile, I'm Not There just missed the top ten with 81,000 units / $1.86 million, which is strong for a limited release. Fellow limited release, Bella, placed 14th with 77,000 units sold and $1.51 million. Two entries from the TV market also reached the top 30 with Avatar the Last Airbender - Book 3 Fire - Volume 3 earning 20th place with 52,000 units / $517,000 while Love's Unfolding Dream placed 21st with 50,000 units / $1.01 million in sales.

On a side note, Alvin and the Chipmunks became just the second film to sell 5 million units this year.

As for Blu-ray, sales were again down for the week, but this was mostly due to the lack of first tier titles and compared to DVD it remained at 5% in the 20 / 20 comparison. Next week will include the Blu-ray debut of The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, which should boost the ratio.
