The Fantastic Four: First Steps

Superman continues to dominate the box office, with the David Corenswet-led blockbuster easily fending off new releases I Know What You Did Last Summer and Smurfs. In its second weekend, Superman pulled in over $58 million, bringing its 10-day domestic total to an impressive $236.2 million. However, the reigning box office champion will face stiff competition as a major Marvel title enters the ring.

Opening this weekend in 4,125 theaters, The Fantastic Four: First Steps introduces a fresh take on Marvel’s iconic superhero team: Reed Richards (Mister Fantastic), Sue Storm (Invisible Woman), Johnny Storm (Human Torch), and Ben Grimm (The Thing). Directed by Matt Shakman and starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn, the film promises a bold new direction for the franchise. First Steps marks the latest installment in the Fantastic Four film series, which has earned nearly $800 million globally to date. More significantly, it joins the expansive Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise, which has grossed more than $32 billion worldwide since launching with Iron Man in 2008.

While most eyes will be on The Fantastic Four, two other wide releases will also debut this weekend. The Home opens in 1,014 theaters and follows a rebellious young man sentenced to community service at a seemingly quiet retirement home—only to discover dark secrets hidden on its forbidden fourth floor. Meanwhile, House on Eden creeps into 600 theaters, telling the story of two paranormal investigators who stumble upon a haunted house deep in the woods, where an ancient evil awaits.

As for the current top five, Superman continues to fly high, despite losing several hundred theaters in its latest weekend. The film remains widely available, still screening in 3,930 cinemas. Taking third place is Jurassic World Rebirth, which has grossed $286 million domestically and is still showing in 3,550 theaters. Rounding out the list are last weekend’s newcomers: Smurfs, holding steady in 3,504 theaters, and I Know What You Did Last Summer in 3,206.

Looking ahead to next weekend, two more sequels are poised to make their theatrical debuts. Liam Neeson returns in The Naked Gun, a legacy reboot set to open in approximately 3,200 theaters. while another sequel, this time in the form of the follow-up to 2022’s. Also on the slate is The Bad Guys 2, the follow-up to the 2022 animated hit, which is expected to launch in around 3,700 locations.
