Army of Newcomers on the Per Theatre Charts

May 2, 2006

There were three films in the $10,000 club, and all of them were new releases led by Army of Shadows with $12,620 in its lone theatre. In second place was the Canadian / India co-production, Water, which earned $56,000 in five theatres for an average of $11,256. The final film was The Lost City with and average of $10,642 in 18 theatres.

Every other film in the top ten on the per theatre charts was also a new release, including three of the four wide releases this week. Another Canadian co-production, Clean, was the best of the rest earning nearly $15,000 in 2 theatres for an average of $7,477 while The Death of Mr. Lazarescu earned $5,880 in one theatre. Lady Vengeance didn't perform as well as the studio and fans would have liked as it made less than $10,000 in 2 theatres for an average of $4,925. Coincidentally, Three Times played in three theatres over the weekend bringing in just over $14,000 for an average of $4,732. The rest of the new releases were well back including Unidentified with $2,653, Guys and Balls with $2,475, and The Whore's Son with $2,157.

This past week also saw milestones reached by a few limited releases:

  • Brick hasn't performed as well as I would have liked, but it still managed to top $1 million this weekend and it might have enough gas in its tank to reach $2 million.
  • The next film is La Mujer de Mi Hermano, or as it is known in English, The Wife of My Brother, (I think, my Spanish is even worse than my French). The film started out faster than expected but as a niche market film is dropped off quickly. Even so, it still managed to reach $2 million during the midweek and should come close to $3 million, but may not reach that milestone.
