International Box Office: Real Steel is the Real Deal

October 19, 2011

Real Steel was able to stay on top of the international chart, just as it did domestically. Over the weekend, it earned $25.03 million on 4,116 screens in 29 markets for a total of $60.94 million internationally. Worldwide it has taken $112.67 million, which is just over what it cost to make. The film opened in several markets, including the U.K., but it had to settle for fourth place with $2.11 million on 385 screens there. On the other hand, it added $4.63 million on 881 screens in Russia and now has earnt $14.39 million in that market. It also remained in first place in Mexico with $2.77 million on 1,049 screens for a total of $7.31 million after two weeks. It also earned first place in Australia with $2.34 million on 349 screens over the weekend, for a total of $7.88 million after two.

The Three Musketeers shot into second place with $20.4 million on 5,100 screens in 40 markets for a total of $49.0 million. The film opened in first place in Brazil, with $2.45 million on 424 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $3.50 million. It was also placed first in Italy with $2.02 million on 500 screens, which was about $10,000 more than local hit This Must Be The Place opened with. On the other hand, it only managed third place in the U.K. with $2.31 million on 485 screens.

Johnny English: Reborn slipped to third place with $17.20 million on 3,411 screens in 43 markets for a total of $85.08 million. The film had no major openings this weekend, but remained in first place in the U.K. with $4.85 million on 521 screens over the weekend, for a total of $15.23 million after two. It climbed to first place in Germany with $2.53 million on 688 screens over the weekend, for a total of $7.15 million also after two. It has already made enough internationally to cover its production budget, so all it will have to do domestically, to be a hit, is match its P&A budget.

There was a large gap between third place and fourth, as Abduction managed just $6.1 million on 2,079 screens in 25 markets for a total of $39.6 million. It had two major market openings this past weekend, reaching third place in Spain with $1.08 million on 298 screens and fourth place in Germany with $1.07 million on 254.

The Lion King rounded out the top five with $5.65 million on 1,866 screens in 27 markets for a total of $38.62 million.

The Smurfs slipped another spot to sixth with $5.13 million on 3,906 screens in 62 markets, but that was enough to lift its international total past $400 million. It has now taken $404.43 million internationally and $544.47 million worldwide.
