DVD Releases for May 5th, 2009 - Part I

May 5th, 2009

The last of the Best Picture Oscar Nominees hits the home market this week. And while the Blu-ray arrived late, the Two-Disc DVD of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is worthy of the DVD Pick of the Week. On the other hand, no other release on this week's list came close to be a contender for that title, and overall it was a rather slow week. Still not so slow that I didn't have to split this week's column into two parts, with the second part found here. More...

DVD Releases for April 22, 2008

April 21st, 2008

It's a slow week by nearly every measure: big releases, overall quality, overall quantity, spotlight reviews, etc. This is great news for me since recently a package arrived with several DVDs, all of which were late. I'm not quite completely caught up, but I am very close. As for this week's releases, there were only a handful of releases that were even in contention for DVD Pick of the Week. Both The Savages - DVD and The Orphanage - DVD or Blu-ray earned excellent reviews, but their home market releases were only average. Cloverfield - DVD wasn't as good a movie, but the DVD had the best combination of movie quality and special features. The specter of a Blu-ray release notwithstanding, it is the DVD Pick of the Week. Limited Releases Too Late for Oscar

DVD Releases for March 27, 2007

March 26th, 2007

Yikes! It's a busy week for DVD releases with closing in on 50 DVDs on this week's list. Not only are there are a lot of films worth checking out, there's a very close race for the DVD Pick of the Week. It came down to Children of Men - Buy from Amazon and The Shield - The Complete Fifth Season - Buy from Amazon. It's practically a coin flip here, but I'm giving the DVD Pick of the Week to Children of Men - Buy from Amazon, after all, I couldn't let the film get passed over for yet another award. That would be just too cruel. More...

DVD Releases for February 20, 2007

February 20th, 2007

It's not a great week for DVD releases. While there are plenty worth talking about, few combine a high quality movie with top-notch extras. Because of this, it was hard to pick a DVD Pick of the Week. Sure, the two spotlight films on this week's list, Shut Up and Sing - Buy from Amazon and The Prestige - Buy from Amazon, are great, but the DVDs leave a lot to be desired. So were the two Canadian entries, Trailer Park Boys - Buy from Amazon.ca and C.R.A.Z.Y. - Buy from Amazon. In many ways Gandhi - Two-Disc Special Edition - Buy from Amazon was the best choice on this week's list, but I'm going with Trailer Park Boys - Buy from Amazon.ca (and I also recommend the massive box set as well). You may call this is a result of a pro-Canada bias, and you would be right. But at least I'm up front about it. More...

A Cut Above the Rest

October 24th, 2006

Running With Scissors ran away with the crown on the per theatre charts, earning an average of $28,264 in its 8 theatres. However, with reviews that are less than impressive, it could have serious troubles expanding. The Nightmare Before Christmas 3D opened in second place with $3.3 million in 168 theatres for an average of $19,506. The only other film to crack $10,000 was The Queen with $15,253 during its fourth week of release. More...
