DVD and Blu-ray Releases for July 10th, 2012

July 9th, 2012

Like last week, it's another really slow week on the home market. Unlike last week, there is at least one first run release coming out. American Reunion should lead the way in terms of sales, but given its reviews and its box office struggles, it won't be a major player. As for the best new release, there are a few interesting titles, like Dark Shadows: The Complete Original Series (Deluxe Edition). But in the end I went with Adventure Time: Complete First Season is the release I'm most looking forward to seeing. (The screener is late, but I will get to the review ASAP after it arrives.) More...

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for March 6th, 2012

March 6th, 2012

The number of big releases coming out this week can be counted on the fingers of one hand. The biggest theatrical release of the week is Immortals, but its reviews were weak enough that I think it might struggle on the home market in comparison. There are also a few catalog titles coming out on Blu-ray that are note-worthy, like To Catch a Thief. However, by far the biggest release, and the best, is Game of Thrones: Season One on DVD or Blu-ray, the latter of which is the Pick of the Week with To Catch a Thief not too far behind. More...

Awards Season: WGAs Welcome Same Group of Nominees

January 5th, 2012

The latest round of major nominations were released today with the WGA nominations. Like much of the rest of the previous announcements, the only surprise was the lack of surprises. Four of the five Original Screenplays earned other nominations in that category or other guild nominations. That number rises to five out of five for Adapted Screenplays. There's little doubt about what films are Oscar contenders at this point. The Documentary films category is a little more contentious, but it usually is. More...

Awards Season: PGAs Build Consensus

January 4th, 2012

The nominees for this year's Producers Guild of America were announced and there were not a lot of surprises. For instance, nine of the ten nominees for Theatrical Motion Pictures also earned Golden Globe Nominations for either Best Drama or Best Musical / Comedy. Four of the five Animated films also did the same. It does make the Awards Season picture a lot clearer going forward, but it makes coming up with something to say much harder. More...

Per Theater Chart: Laughing at the Competition

September 14th, 2011

There was only one film to reach the $10,000 mark on the per theater chart, but it did it with style. Kevin Hart: Laugh at My Pain earned just under $2 million in 98 theaters for an average of $19,474. I wasn't expecting it to earn $2 million in total. More...

Per Theater Chart: State Makes Senna See Red

August 24th, 2011

Red State continued its run of special engagements this past weekend earning $25,800 in one theater. The only other film to reach the $10,000 mark was Senna, which earned an average of $11,365 in 14 theaters. More...

Weekend Estimates: Weak Field Gifts The Help Top Spot

August 21st, 2011

Four weak debut weekends has gifted The Help a win at the box office as the historical drama posted an impressive 21% decline from last weekend to earn an estimated $20.479 million. The decline in percentage terms was helped by the fact that the film opened on a Wednesday, but it's still an impressive performance. Rise of the Apes help on to second place with $16.3 million in its third weekend, which is perhaps an even better indication of the level of disinterest in the new releases. More...

Per Theater Chart: Senna Races to the Top

August 16th, 2011

Senna easily won the race to the top of the per theater chart with an average of $36,749 in two theaters. The next best was way back, as CornerStore earned $12,743 in its lone theater. The only other film in the $10,000 club was The Help at $10,278. More...

Too Limited to Thrive

August 12th, 2011

It's a short list of limited releases this week, and not only that, but only one of them is opening in more than a couple theaters. The widest release, Aarakshan, is also a Bollywood production, so its chances of expanding are remote. More...
