Wow. That was... Due to technical difficulties, late deliveries, and some misfiled DVDs, this week's list is a little later than normal (but it's still Tuesday, so it's not technically late). It is also a lot larger than normal with a record number of Spotlight reviews (23 in all, or 30 if you count individual movies). There are also some very high quality releases including Zack and Miri Make a Porno on either DVD or Blu-ray. However, given the subject matter of that film, I wouldn't recommend it to everyone. The best release of the week is, Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist on DVD or Blu-ray, but especially the Blu-ray, which is worth the upgrade. That film is the DVD Pick of the Week. With a record number of spotlight reviews, it goes without saying that the list had to be split up this week, with the second part found here, while the third part can be found here. (First time I had to separate the list into three parts.)

New releases were just as spread out on the rental chart as they were on the sales chart, including taking the top two spots with Max Payne generating about 25% more revenue than Saw V.

New in Town, or as it was previously known, Chilled in Miami, is one of three widish releases next week. However, while it is expected to have the smallest theater count amongst the three, it is the target film this week, as we have a fabulous prize pack from the movie to give away. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office of New in Town.
Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a New in Town prize pack that comes with a mini-poster, full sized poster, T-shirt, postcard, bookmark, luggage tag, and more.
Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will win Henry Poole is Here on Blu-ray.
Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay!

A terrible week for first run releases. There are five such releases on this week's list, but they has a combined haul of around $130 million, and nearly $100 million of that came from two films. With no big releases, we had to look other places for the DVD Pick of the Week. Repo! The Genetic Opera on Blu-ray is a clear contender for that title, but its lack of mass appeal is troublesome. This American Life - Season Two is a safer pick, but it is a Borders Exclusive release. Regardless of these issues, both releases are worthy of the DVD Pick of the Week. Despite the weakness at the top, there are still more than enough total releases to cause this column to stretch into two parts. The second part can be found here.

There's not a wide selection of new releases this week, but there are a few that are opening in several hundred theaters each. In fact, the semi-wide releases out number the truly limited releases, which includes one Canadian movie. Speaking of Canada, Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer is expanding into the United States this week in 2 theaters, the Pioneer Theater in New York City, and at the Laemmle Sunset 5 in in Los Angeles.
