There are no reported numbers for re-releases this week, so information was very limited on this weekend’s box office chart. Followed fell nearly 50% from its opening weekend, earning $77,609 in 41 theaters for a two-week total of $330,197. Becky was right behind with $72,776 in just 17 theaters for a total of $817,916 after four weeks of release. It was down just 13%, meaning if it can keep this up, it will be on pace for $1 million domestically. This would be great news for its distributor, Quiver, and indeed good news for the box office in general. Overall, however, the theatrical market is looking dismal, particularly with growing COVID-19 case counts around the country, many states reversing course on relaxing lockdowns, and movie theater chains delaying their reopenings.

We still have very few distributors actually releasing box office numbers, so there’s no real change at the weekend box office chart compared to last week, when it comes to films with official numbers released. However, Deadline is reporting a top ten with The Invisible Man coming out on top with an estimated $383,000 over the weekend for a total of $67.8 million so far. This represents a 37% growth from last week. The film climbed ahead of Trolls World Tour, which dipped 9% to $276,000 over the weekend for a total of $3.6 million after ten weeks of release.

None of the major studios have been releasing box office numbers in recent weeks, so the weekend box office chart was dominated by those independent distributors that did, in particular IFC Films and IFC Midnight. However, Deadline is reporting that Universal had in fact been dominating the box office. In fact, Trolls World Tour has been leading the way every week since it was released two months ago, and earned $3.1 million, including $300,000 in 197 theaters this past weekend. The studio’s success doesn’t end there.

There are some high quality new releases on VOD this week, and several are worth checking out, including Harley Quinn, and Sound! Euphonium the Movie — Our Promise: A Brand New Day. The lack of major theatrical releases over the past couple of months is really beginning to be felt on the home market now, though, with most releases smaller independent films.
