Synopsis
A few years from now…Bacurau, a small village in the Brazilian sertão, mourns the loss of its matriarch, Carmelita, who lived to be 94. Days later, its inhabitants notice that their village has literally vanished from most maps and a UFO-shaped drone starts flying overhead. There are forces that want to expel them from their homes, and soon, in a genre-bending twist, a band of armed mercenaries arrive in town picking off the inhabitants one by one. A fierce confrontation takes place when the
townspeople turn the tables on the villainous outsiders, banding together by any means necessary to protect and maintain their remote community.

It is a deceptively slow week for DVDs and Blu-rays, with only five major new releases. However, while there are few releases compared to historical norms, and none of them are poised to be massive hits on the home market, all five are worth picking up and two are contenders for Pick of the Week. Those are from Criterion Collection: Bruce Lee: His Greatest Hits (Blu-ray) and The Lady Eve (Blu-ray). Both are worthy contenders, but while I went with the Bruce Lee box set, its price might scare away some potential customers.

There are way too many limited releases and I fear this will hurt the box office chances of any film coming out this week. This is too bad, as there are several that deserve to find an audience, including Bacurau, Extra Ordinary, First Cow, Go Back to China, and so many more. It’s going to be tough when none of the films open in the $10,000 club.
