Theater counts: Superman flies into theaters, while Jurassic World maintains its spot as the widest release

The Fourth of July weekend turned up some hefty numbers for newcomer Jurassic World Rebirth as the latest in the long-running Jurassic Park franchise snatched up just over $92 million during the three-day weekend and nearly $148 million since opening the previous Wednesday. The three-day opening figure places the film directly in the middle for best domestic openers in the franchise. Rebirth will once again retain its spot as the widest release but will unfortunately take a backseat to a newcomer, but familiar face, with the release of Superman.

Speaking of long-running film franchises, the Superman franchise goes back almost 50 years to when Christopher Reeve first flew onto the silver screen as The Man of Steel during the winter of 1978. The newest iteration seeks to add significant dough to a global franchise total of nearly $3.22 billion. The latest film, which is directed by film veteran James Gunn, follows a Superman who must reconcile his alien Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as reporter Clark Kent. David Corenswet takes over the iconic role and is joined by an all-star cast including Nathan Fillion, Edi Gathegi, Isabela Merced, and Nicholas Hoult, with the latter playing Superman’s arch nemesis, Lex Luthor. Superman will make its North American debut in 4,135 movie houses.

While Superman is the only new wide release to make its way to the big screen this weekend, there is, per usual, a long list of limited releases showing in theaters all across North America. The largest footprint of these newcomers is the latest from IFC Entertainment Group with the release of the supernatural-horror feature, Abraham’s Boys: A Dracula Story. Directed by Natasha Kermani, the movie follows two boys who have spent their lives under the strict rule of their father, but as they dive deeper into understanding their father’s paranoia, their world unravels as they discover the truth about his history with Dracula. Abraham’s Boys will roll out in 470 venues. Making its way into 54 locations this weekend is the true-life action-thriller, Sovereign. The film casts Nick Offerman, Jacob Tremblay, and Dennis Quaid, among others, and is based on the true story of the police shootings that occurred in West Memphis in the spring of 2010.

Rounding out the top five this weekend is the aforementioned current box office leader in Jurassic World Rebirth, which adds 16 venues for its second weekend for a total of 4,324. Occupying the third-place spot this go-around is a former chart topper, with F1: The Movie losing 320 locations this weekend but still widely available, playing in 3,412 cinemas. Starting its fourth weekend at the box office is $230 million domestic earner, How to Train Your Dragon, showing in 3,280 movie venues. Lastly, dropping below 3,000 theaters for the first time is Elio, also beginning its fourth weekend by playing in 2,730 locations.

We should once again see a fair amount of variety next weekend with the upcoming wide releases. These include A24’s politically charged action-comedy, Eddington; the horror sequel, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and everyone’s favorite blue crew, with the release of Smurfs. The latter films are set to debut in approximately 3,000 and 3,200 theaters, respectively.
