Theater counts: Deadpool & Wolverine slash their way into 4,210 theaters

Twisters blew into theaters last weekend, whisking up a splendid $81 million in its opening frame, and currently enjoys a six-day domestic total of just over $113 million. The disaster film’s reign at the top of the box office, however, will likely be short-lived as two new wide releases make their way into theaters, including the long-awaited arrival of Deadpool & Wolverine.

After six years, everybody’s favorite antihero joker, Deadpool, is back, and with the help of a reluctant Wolverine, the duo must combine forces to take on an existential threat to their homeworld. The latest venture is the third in the Deadpool franchise, which has seized $1.57 billion in worldwide receipts through two previous installments. The film brings back Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman to play the titular roles of Deadpool and Wolverine, respectively. Starting out in 4,210 locations, it will mark the second-largest footprint for the franchise after Deadpool 2 opened in 4,349 theaters back in May of 2018.

Also opening in wide release this weekend is the comedy movie, The Fabulous Four. Beginning its run in 1,045 cinemas, the film features the star-studded foursome of Susan Sarandon, Bette Midler, Megan Mullally, and Sheryl Lee Ralph as friends who re-unite in Key West, Florida, to be bridesmaids at their friend’s surprise wedding.

Rounding out the top five this weekend is the current box office champ Twisters, adding 19 viewing locations for a total of 4,170 venues. Occupying the third place position is Despicable Me 4, dropping below 4,000 locations for the first time, landing at 3,610 cinemas this weekend. Starting its seventh weekend on the big screen, mega-blockbuster Inside Out 2 can still be seen in a solid 3,150 theaters. Lastly, A Quiet Place: Day One finishes out the top films by showing in 1,932 venues.

Looking ahead to next weekend, we see three more films set to open in wide release, including Harold and the Purple Crayon, starring Zachary Levi as the namesake character. The fantasy-comedy feature is expected to arrive in approximately 3,000 cinemas. Also making its first foray into theaters is the latest psychological thriller from M. Night Shyamalan, with the debut of Trap, starring Josh Hartnett. Warner Bros. projects Trap to kickoff in approximately 3,200 theaters.
