Theater counts: Twisters winds its way into 4,151 theaters
July 18, 2024
After six consecutive weeks of box office dominance, the reign of animated features looks to be coming to an end this weekend as Twisters funnels into theaters. It has been impressive run for Inside Out 2, and Despicable Me 4, however, as the two films have combined for a worldwide total of over $1.84 billion, largely due to the massive success of the former.
Starting its run in 4,151 cinemas, Twisters is a standalone sequel to the 1996 disaster film, Twister, starring Helen Hunt and the late Bill Paxton, a film that went on to round up nearly $500 million in box office receipts globally. The latest installment stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell, two storm aficionados from very different backgrounds who find themselves in a fight for their lives amidst the paths of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma. Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, the story is from Joseph Kosinski, who directed Powell in the 2022 blockbuster film Top Gun: Maverick. The film will be available in both traditional large formats as well as IMAX screens throughout North America.
Rounding out the top five this weekend is current box office champ, Despicable Me 4, dropping 337 viewing locations for a total of 4,112 theaters. Occupying the third-widest release is the aforementioned juggernaut, Inside Out 2, showing in 3,625 venues. Next up is last week’s newcomer in Fly Me to the Moon, holding steady at its debut count of 3,356 movie houses. Lastly, A Quiet Place: Day One dips below the 3,000 count this weekend, landing at a still solid 2,913 locations.
Opening in 790 locations this weekend is the Irish horror film, Oddity. The movie follows a blind medium who is still grieving the death of her twin sister when she finds that a wooden mannequin from her cabinet of curiosities becomes imperative to her crusade to uncover the truth about her sister’s murder.
Looking ahead to next week, we see the inflow of three new wide releases, including the long-awaited Deadpool & Wolverine. The superhero combo feature is expected to open in approximately 4,100 premium large formats and IMAX locations. Dìdi (弟弟) and The Fabulous Four are also set to make their theatrical debuts.
