Streaming Releases: Black is King and Beyoncé is Queen
July 31, 2020
The last week of the month is often the slowest for new releases on streaming services. Not only are people excited for the flood of catalog titles coming out at the beginning of next month, they’re also too busy catching up on shows that are about to leave to pay attention to new releases. This leaves fewer than usual releases this week. That said, while there are only three movies / TV shows on the main list, all three are worth checking out. Of these three, Black is King will almost certainly be the biggest release of the week.
Black is King
Muppets Now: Season One
The Umbrella Academy: Season Two
Last Chance U: Season Five - Video on Demand
Movies
Disney+
Beyoncé’s “visual album” companion to her album The Lion King: The Gift, which in turn was inspired by The Lion King. It is earning stellar reviews and will not only likely be the biggest streaming hit of the week, it could convince more than a few people to subscribe to Disney+.

Disney+
I grew up watching the Muppets so I’m looking forward to watching this show, but sadly my schedule hasn’t allowed me to do that just yet. The reviews are good, but not great. That said, even the negative reviews admit the show has potential, so I remain cautiously optimistic. I was one of the few people who enjoyed watching the previous network TV show, so there’s a great chance I will enjoy this one as well.
Netflix
A family with super powers is reunited after their father’s death and learns of a worldwide threat. The first season’s reviews were good, but season two’s reviews are great. This is partly because the vast majority of critics who reviewed the first season gave up on show before season two. (That does happen quite a lot; Iron Fist is a perfect example of that.) Umbrella Academy is one of Netflix’s biggest shows, and fans of the first season should be excited by the new outing.
Other TV Shows
