Theater Averages: Making Waves

November 20, 2019

Waves

Waves led the way on the theater average chart with an opening weekend average of $33,583 in four theaters. Jay and Silent Bob Reboot was in second place with an average of $16,899 in ten theaters. Its road show has been a success so far, but the film did cost $10 million to make, so it will need to continue to have strong weekend numbers for a long time to break even. Recorder: The Marion Stokes Project opened with $12,140 in its lone theater. Honey Boy fell from an average of $75,266 in four theaters to an average of just $11,957 in 17. That’s still a good average, but its odds of expanding even semi-wide have been lowered dramatically.

There were not a lot of other new limited releases that did well. Mickey and the Bear came close to the $10,000 club with an opening of $9,375 in one theater. The Divine Move 2: The Wrathful did okay with an average of $6,135 in two theaters. White Snake and Hollywould both struggled with averages of $2,791 and $2,645 respectively. Everybody’s Everything just avoided the Mendoza Line with an average $2,089 in 29 theaters. Scandalous wasn’t as lucky with an average of just $834 is 13 theaters. The Warrior Queen of Jhansi struggled even more with an average $407 while playing in 276 theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a couple of Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Better Days topped $1 million before the weekend, but its theater average collapsed, so getting to $2 million isn’t very likely.
  • Jojo Rabbit reached $10 million before the weekend and it is already more than halfway to $15 million.
