Friday Estimates: Infinity War Breaks up the Party
May 12, 2018
Avengers: Infinity War was on the high end of expectations on Friday with $16.00 million during its 15th day of release. This puts it on pace for $62 million during its third weekend of release for a running tally of $548 million. It became the second fastest film to reach $500 million domestically, getting there a day faster than The Last Jedi did. The film also debuted in China earning $60.73 million on Friday, $70.06 million including previews. Only Monster Hunt 2 and The Fate of the Furious had faster starts.
Life of the Party struggled with just $4.91 million during its opening day. Its reviews are 42% positive, while it only managed a B from CinemaScore, and neither result suggests good legs. On the other hand, Mother’s Day is on Sunday, so the film should get a boost at the box office, meaning it could earn as much as $18 million. $17 million is a safer prediction.
Breaking In was right behind with $4.6 million. Its reviews were similar to Life of the Party’s reviews, while both movies earned a B from CinemaScore. However, Breaking In’s genre tend to be more front-loaded and it is less likely to get a boost from Mother’s Day. Look for an opening of $14 million, which is still on the higher end of expectations.
Overboard held on better than expected with $2 million on Friday, putting it on pace for more than $8 million over the weekend. This is probably not enough to get it to $50 million domestically, but it should be enough to be a financial success.
