Midnight Box Office: Not a lot of (Paranormal) Activity at Midnight Showings
October 23, 2015
There were four films that had midnight shows last night, but none of them did particularly well. In fact, had their combined total been earned by one movie, it still wouldn't be much to celebrate about. Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension led the way with $600,000 in 1,000 theaters. This is substantially lower than the $800,000 Crimson Peak earned just last week, and that film wasn't a big hit at the box office during its opening weekend. Additionally, Crimson Peak's reviews are a lot better The Ghost Dimension's reviews are. Add in the sequel effect and we could be in for a really bad opening weekend.
The Last Witch Hunter was close behind with $525,000. Its reviews are nearly identical, but it isn't a sequel, so it doesn't have as large of a built in audience. This could mean it comes out ahead of Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension by the end of the weekend. Even if it does, it won't be a big hit.
The other two films are Rock the Kasbah and Jem and the Holograms. Rock the Kasbah only managed $75,000 in 1,247 theaters, while Jem and the Holograms was well back at just $34,000 in 944 theaters. Those two films earned per theater averages of $60.14 and $36.02. Converting that to a per hour basis, and there's a chance the projectionist made more money during these showings than the studios did. I didn't expect these films to be hits, but I certainly was expecting better than this.
