International Details - Marching to the Top
October 15, 2006
The German Film, Deutschland. Ein Sommermarchen, which could translate into English as Germany, A Summer March, but I wouldn't bet money on it. ... Moving on, The film took top spot in its native market with $7.19 million on 584 screens and that was enough for sixth place overall.
- The Departed started its international run day and date openings in 5 markets, including the U.K. where it placed second with $4.30 million on 363 screens. The film also earned second place in Hong Kong with $539,000 on 38 screens and in Russia with $793,000 on 293 screens. Overall it made $6.18 million on 769 screens in 5 markets, which was good enough for seventh place.
- Holiydays helped Bo bui gai wak, a.k.a. Rob-B-Hood, remain nearly flat with $4.89 million on 1003 screens in 6 markets for a total of $13.73 million after two. For instance, the film nearly doubled its take in South Korea as it climbed into fifth place with $687,000 on 135 screens for a total of $1.59 million.
- Marrying the Mafia 3 also benefited from holidays as it shot up 77% and back into the top ten. Over the weekend it made $4.16 million on 420 screens for a three week total of $19.61 million, all of which came from South Korea.
- Indigenes, a.k.a. Days of Glory, fell to tenth place with $3.89 million on 615 screens in 2 marksets for a three week total of $10.45 million. Almost all of that came in its native France where it made $3.75 million on 583 screens for a two-week total of $10.33 million.
- Step Up continues to expand adding $2.70 million on 701 screens in 17 markets for a total of $9.73 million internationally. Openings this week include a fourth place, $997,000 opening on 220 screens in Germany while it remained in second place in Australia with $850,000 on 154 screens for a two-week total of $2.76 million.
- Cars continues to wrap up its international run adding $2.69 million on 2323 screens in 23 markets for a total of $208.18 million.
- Nada SoSo, a.k.a. Nada-Sousou, slipped to second place in Japan with $2.65 million on 329 screens over the weekend and $9.13 million in total.
- Hoodwinked! only has one major market left, Germany, and it doesn't open there till December. This weekend the film added $2.55 million on 996 screens in 4 markets for a total of $43.38 million.
- Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest fell to 15th place with $2.41 million on 1565 screens in 26 markets for a total of $635.39 million.
- Miami Vice started better than expected in Italy scoring first place with $1.57 million on 298 screens over the weekend. This helped its overall total grow 24% to $2.34 million on 1043 screens in 38 markets for a total of $91.39 million. With this better than expected result and China and Lebanon just around the corner, it could still hit $100 million internationally.
- A Radio Star saw its fortunes climb 62% in South Korea adding $2.25 million on 291 screens to its running tally of $5.45 million.
- The Black Dahlia opened in Germany but missed the top ten with $286,000 on 145 screens. That, and a few other smaller openings, helped the film stay relatively flat earning $2.21 million over the weekend on 933 screens in 10 markets for a very early total of $8.38 million.
- Open Season entered the international charts for the first time coming in 29th place with $2.09 million on 739 screens in 14 markets for a total of $3.95 million. This film had a handful of number one openings in Latin America, including Brazil, Chile, Peru and Venezuela. However, only estimates available where from Brazil where it managed $750,000 on 250 screens.
- Little Man fell 8 spots to 20th with $1.93 million on 1138 screens in 41 markets for a total of $36.69 million.
- The Ant Bully opened in third place in Russia with $386,000 on 143 screens and that helped it climb further up the charts this weekend. The film just missed the top twenty, but did add $1.93 million on 1302 screens in 38 markets for a total of $22.25 million. With just a couple more major markets left to open in, there's little chance that it will turn its run around making it one of the most disappointing digitally animated films in a long time.
- Los Borgia, a.k.a. The Borgia, opened in second place in its native Spain with $1.78 million on 305 screens. This is a pretty good start in the market, but I'm afraid another local hit will all but overshadow this film's performance.
- Barnyard: The Original Party Animals re-entered the charts with $1.78 million on 816 screens in 8 markets for a very early international total of $4.16 million. Its biggest market of the weekend was Germany, but it could only mange seventh during its opening there with $667,000 on 396 screens, but that's quite a poor start there.
- A handful of smaller openings could keep You, Me & Dupree from falling more than 10 spots to 24th. Over the weekend it did make $1.77 million on 1173 screens in 33 markets for a total of $42.65 million, which is a pretty good total for a Frat Pack movie, which tend to struggle internationally.
- Scoop started its international run in earnest this past weekend with a second place, $1.50 million opening on 352 screens in Italy. Adding in smaller openings and holdovers and the film made $1.74 million on 360 screens for a total of $1.80 million. The film should have no problem beating its domestic total and pie in the sky it could earn $20 million or more.
- Holidays in South Korean pushed Maundy Thursday back onto the charts with $1.52 million on 250 screens for a total of $18.82 million.
- Over The Hedge opened in Greece over the weekend, unfortunately not even studio estimates were releases. Overall it made $1.38 million on 732 screens in 19 markets for a total of $166.59 million with Italy coming at the end of the month.
- Monster House is holding on well down just 27% to $1.34 million on 1477 screens in 51 markets for a running total of $57.18 million.
- Le Grand Meulnes, a.k.a. The Big ... Meulnes, I guess, opened in fourth place in France with $1.25 million on 413 screens, which was enough for 29th overall.
- Ye Yan, a.k.a., The Banquet had the worst week-to-week drop-off on the charts plummeting 55% and 16 places. In the end it managed 30th place with $1.11 million on 348 screens in 6 markets for a total of $22.21 million.
- Accepted started its international run with an eighth place, $654,000 debut on 249 screens in the U.K. The film should do better in Australia but struggle just about everywhere else.
- Jackass: Number Two finished in second in its international debut earning $393,000 on 50 screens over the weekend and $400,000 in total.
