Unrated Unbeatable on the Per Theatre Charts

September 6, 2006

This Film is Not Yet Rated started its run with a first place finish on the per theatre charts as it took in $30,664 in 2 theatres for an average of $15,332. The only other film to top $10,000 was Mutual Appreciation with $13,142 in its lone theatre.

The best of the rest was well back, with Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles earning $28,223 in 5 theatres for an average of $5,645. Looking for Kitty failed to find an audience with just $3,210 in its lone theatre, but that was miles ahead of Lassie ($1,505) and Idiocracy ($957). Both of those last two films suffered from too many theatres and not enough publicity. One last note, Idiocracy earned much better reviews than expected, especially after it was not screened for critics, and should find quite a following on the home market.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theatre Charts alumni:

  • Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man topped $1 million during the weekend, but that's as far as it will go.
  • Trust the Man disappointed during its opening and hasn't exactly redeemed itself during its expansion. However, it did make it to $1 million this weekend and should hit $2 million before too long.
  • Quinceanera has peaked at the box office, but that didn't stop it from making it to $1 million over the weekend. Depending on how soft its decline is, it could make it to $2 million before its run is over.
  • Boynton Beach Club never earned a $10,000 per theatre average, but strong word-of-mouth and a broader release has helped it over the $2 million mark this weekend with $3 million clearly in its sights.
  • Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna reached $3 million late during the midweek. Very late during the midweek.
  • Wordplay made it all the way to $3 million over the weekend, which is a huge number for a niche independent documentary.
  • Scoop found its way to $10 million over the weekend, and while this is a substantial drop-off from Woody Allen's previous film, it is still a step above his recent track record.
  • The Illusionist is the latest limited release that might graduate from this list. This weekend the film earned more than $5 million on its way to a $10 million running tally. This will lead to another significant expansion and possibly even another top five finish.
