Per Theatre Charts - No Stranger to Success

July 6, 2006

Strangers With Candy easily led the per theatre charts this weekend with just over $43,000 in 2 theatres for an average of $21,571. Since it debuted on Wednesday, the film has made almost $70,000. Second place went to the overall box office champ, Superman Returns, which pulled in a solid average $12,924 of over the three-day weekend. Last week's winner was the only holdover to reach $10,000 average as Wassup Rockers brought in nearly $35,000 on 3 screens for an average of $11,570.

There was a considerable gap between the $10,000 club and the next best new release as The Motel earned $7,100 in its lone theatre. Who Killed the Electric Car was not as fortunate with $45,000 in 8 theatres for an average of $5,642, which will limit its opportunity to expand. On the other hand, Rank was D.O.A. as it brought in a mere $314 over the weekend. Strangely, the film made more than $1800 on Wednesday and Thursday, which should have meant at least $3000 over the weekend.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theatre Charts alumni:

  • Brick topped $2 million midweek, but that's as far as it will go theatrically. I suspect it will become a bigger hit on the home market, but it will take a while for the word of mouth to spread.
  • Fanaa also reached to $2 million midweek, and like the previous film, it too will not hit any more milestones.
  • The Lost City made it a hat-trick of $2 million milestones. However, it could still hit $3 million, but it will need a little help along the way.
  • An Inconvenient Truth hit $10 million midweek, which is a fantastic total for a documentaty. While it has peaked, it should still have enough life in it to make it to $15 million and possibly even $20 million.
