Home Market: Second Wedding not quite as Opulent
January 21, 2006
It was a busy week for new releases with three newcomers in the top five, but that didn't stop Wedding Crashers from keeping its home market crown.
The DVD was able to top the charts for the second week in a row with $10.29 million, which was down 24% from last week and enough to lift its total to $24.18 million after just two weeks.
There was a virtual tie for second place with Red Eye earning $8.22 million and The Transporter 2 just behind with $8.10 million.
The Constant Gardener was well back with $4.38 million, while The 40-Year Old Virgin just managed to stay in the top five with $3.92 million for the week and an amazing $36.76 million after five weeks.
The only other newcomer to chart this week was Hustle & Flow, which placed seventh with $3.43 million during the week.
Overall, business was up slightly from last week, earning $165.7 million.
That was 2.9% more than last week, but 7.1% less than the same week last year.
Year to date, 2006 has brought in $326.8 million, which is down 7.2% from 2005's pace, but it is obviously too early in the year to judge 2006.
Four of the top five rentals were also in the top five on the sales chart, with Wedding Crashers leading the way.
The Transporter 2 took second place ahead of Hustle & Flow, both of which performed better on the sales charts.
The same can't be said for Red Eye or The Constant Gardener, which finished in fourth and fifth places respectively.
There were no other new release that finished in the top twenty this week.
There was only one new release in the top ten on the TV on DVD sales charts this week, but that doesn't mean there was nothing interesting to report.
Family Guy - Volume 3 remained in first place during its seventh week of release.
Firefly - The Complete Series shot up to second place on the chart this week, more than 2 years after its initial release (more on that later).
Third place went to Battlestar Galactica - Season 2.0, which was also higher on the charts than last week.
24 - The Complete Fourth Season was buoyed by the premiere of the new season, and that helped it reenter the top five.
Rounding out this week's chart was The Shield - The Complete Fourth Season, which fell from second to fifth.
The only new release to chart this week was The Flash - The Complete Series, which came in tenth place.
As mentioned, Firefly - The Complete Series finished in second place on the TV on DVD charts.
Meanwhile, Serenity remained in 14th place on the sales chart and added $1.14 million to its total rentals of $9.19 million so far.
At this pace it will reach profitability, probably after it has made its first appearance on network TV.
Is this enough for a sequel? Only if the studio is feeling generous.
The TV on DVD rental charts were even more bizarre, with four of the top ten spots being occupied by releases from the 24 franchise.
However, Lost - The Complete First Season was able to retake the lead with $266,000 over the week while 24 - The Complete Fourth Season was just $3,000 behind at $263,000.
Six Feet Under - The Complete Fourth Season climbed into third place with $88,000, just ahead of Desperate Housewives - The Complete First Season ($79,000), and Sopranos - The Complete Fifth Season.
On to the rest of the 24 releases.
Season 1 finished in sixth place with $70,000 just ahead of Season 3, which took in $68,000 while Season 2 rounded out the top ten with $61,000.
