International Details - Summer Transforms into Fall

August 26, 2007

The Transformers fell out of the top five but still cracked 8 digits with $11.10 million on 54.92 screens in 52 markets for a total of $354.33 million. The film is mostly coasting on holdovers at the moment, but it did top the Polish market with $664,000 on 106 screens while its best market was Japan where it added $2.49 million on 592 screens over the weekend for a total of $23.98 million.

  • Surf's Up grew again this past weekend up 36% to 6.99 million on 2162 screens in 37 markets for a total of $24.78 million so far. The film opened in Spain earning fourth place with just $1.35 million on 450 screens over the weekend but $2.64 million including midweek numbers. It only held well in the U.K. down just 1% to $1.18 million on 402 screens over the weekend, however, its running tally of $4.48 million is still disappointing compared to the performances of other digitally animated films this year.
  • Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer finally topped its domestic total this past weekend after adding $6.47 million on 2345 screens in 13 markets for a total of $134.75 million. The film's biggest market of the weekend was France where it added $2.73 million on 750 screens for a two-week total of $8.74 million.
  • Evan Almighty remained in ninth place with $5.14 million on 2327 screens in 29 markets for a total of $32.15 million. The film opened in 8th place in France with $1.21 million on 395 screens, but that was for the full week. Meanwhile, in the U.K. the film added $996,000 on 387 screens over the weekend to its total of $8.91 million, which is still a very disappointing figure. It seems unlikely that the film will be able to turn its fortune around at this point making it one of the most expensive box office failures of the year.
  • Stardust climbed into the top ten during its second weekend of release adding $4.82 million on 698 screens in 5 markets for a very early total of $9.07 million. The film opened in fifth place in South Korea with $1.41 million on 222 screens over the weekend and $2.39 million in total while it added $1.80 million on 505 screens during its second weekend in Russia for a total of $6.08 million. The film will likely end its domestic run with $35 - $40 million, but it will easily beat that on the international scene, perhaps by enough to cover its production costs.
  • Live Free or Die Hard added $4.78 million on 2090 screens in 18 markets for a total of $214.63 million. Its best single market over the weekend was Australia where it added $1.60 million on 361 screens for a total of $5.63 million.
  • D-War fell 54% to $4.70 million on 502 screens over the weekend; however, that was still enough for first place in South Korea and $48.61 million in total.
  • Fellow South Korean film, May 18, remained in second place in its native market and 13th place overall with $3.37 million on 397 screens over the weekend and $39.80 million in total.
  • Another South Korean film placed 14th on the charts as Underground Rendez-vous opened in third place in its native market with $2.52 million on 281 screens over the weekend and $4.69 million overall.
  • License To Wed earned 15th place with $2.33 million on 1275 screens in 13 markets for a total of $10.38 million after three weeks. The film's best market was Mexico where it placed fourth with $693,000 on 349 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $2.51 million.
  • I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry returned to the charts in 16th place with $2.31 million on 371 screens in 6 markets for a total of $5.23 million internationally. The vast majority of that came from Australia where the film opened in first place with $1.88 million on 327 screens over the weekend and $1.96 million in total. This is the film's first major market while it doesn't really get going till mid-September.
  • Ocean's Thirteen continues to march towards $300 million worldwide added $2.27 million on 1036 screens in 40 markets for a total of $179.25 million internationally and $295.91 million worldwide.
  • Bratz: The Movie started its international run off in 18th place with $2.02 million on 467 screens in 4 markets for a total of $2.88 million. Almost all of this came from the film's fourth place $2.48 million opening on 389 screens in the U.K., which included previews.
  • Chak De India remained in the top 20 with $1.96 million on 542 screens in 17 markets for a total of $7.62 million. The film's holds were better than expected and it could move from hit to blockbuster status.
  • Changing Partners was the fourth South Korean film to chart this week earned 20th place with $1.83 million on 299 screens over the weekend and $3.35 million in total.
  • A Love Story opened in first place in the Philippines with $1.49 million on 81 screens, which was enough for 21st place internationally.
  • Shrek the Third fell out of the top 20 with $1.35 million on 2003 screens in 22 markets for a total of $415.48 million internationally and $736.18 million worldwide.
  • Une Fille Coupee en Deux held up very well in France down just 18% to $1.25 million on 372 screens over the weekend and $1.20 million in total.
  • Blood Brothers opened in second place its native China helping it score 24th place with $1.25 million on 368 screens over the weekend and $1.65 million in total. Of that total, $1.52 million came from China, but that includes midweek numbers.
  • Monkey Magic added $1.20 million on 461 screens to its total of $31.59 million. That was enough for 25th place internationally and 5th place in Japan and 22nd overall.
  • Pokemon 2007 earned a nearly identical $1.20 million on 351 screens over the weekend for a total of $37.62 million.
  • Next returned to the charts in 27th place with $1.09 million on 561 screens in 7 markets for a total of $35.36 million. It was able to return to the top 30 thanks to its third place, $721,000 opening on 236 screens in Mexico. Even with a few more significant markets left to open in, this film has little chance of turning things around.
  • Hunting and Gathering, the French film, opened in sixth place in Germany with $974,000 on 130 screens. Overall the film added $1.08 million on 153 screens in 3 markets for a total of $17.88 million internationally.
  • No Reservations added $958,000 on 527 screens in 12 markets for a still early total of $4.79 million. The film hasn't opened in many major markets, but that changes shortly as it will debut in Australia and the U.K. before the month ends.
  • Knocked Up returned to the charts, barely, with $940,000 on 458 screens in 14 markets for a total of $18.09 million. It was able to do with despite having no openings in major markets. In fact, its biggest opening came in Norway where in placed second with $204,000 on 30 screens over the weekend and $237,000 in total.
