International Top Five - Pirates Catching Up
June 6, 2007
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End lost more than 50% of its international opening this past weekend, but it was still the clear winner with an outstanding $103.22 million on 17,500 screens in 103 markets. It also became the fastest film to reach $400 million internationally with $406.41 million after the weekend and that places it 25th on that particular chart. Worldwide the film had $623.96 million, which put it in 30th place just behind The Incredibles (it overtook that film during the week).
At this pace, the film should have no difficulty catching Spider-Man 3 and become the biggest international box office hit this year.
It should manage to become the worldwide leader shortly afterward.
The film was only able to top $10 million in one market, the U.K. with $10.69 million on 550 screens for a total of $58.18 million, but it also came very close in Japan ($9.62 million on 873 screens for a $36.16 million total), and Germany ($9.61 million on 974 screens for a $37.58 million total).
Other million dollar markets include, but are not limited to...
Spider-Man 3 remained in second place, adding $12.61 million on 8,603 screens in 76 markets for a total of $526.75 million internationally and $845.09 million worldwide.
The film is now in 12th place internationally and 14th worldwide and should climb into the top ten on both charts, assuming no current release gets there first.
There were very few markets where the film was able to crack $1 million over the weekend, but that list was led by Japan at $1.58 million on 592 screens.
It has managed $51.23 million after a month of release there.
Thanks to a couple of major market openings, Zodiac was able to remain in third place for the third weekend in a row with $5.90 million on 1,911 screens in 36 markets for a total of $26.45 million.
The film opened in second place in Germany with a weak $808,000 on 150 screens while it had to settle for fifth in Mexico with $336,000 on 144 screens.
Shrek the Third was flat over the weekend, adding $4.35 million on 804 screens in 8 markets for a still early total of $28.03 million.
The film doubled its market count with openings in four smaller Asian markets including breaking records for animated films in both Singapore ($1.2 million on 30 screens), and Malaysia with $572,000 on 49.
However, it was Russia that was the top draw this weekend as it added $1.5 million on 436 screens for a $21.1 million total so far.
Secret Sunshine grew by 66% but remained in second place in South Korea with $2.39 million on 321 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $6.57 million.
The film has yet to open in China, but does so this weekend.
