Weekend Estimates: Pirates Plunder Memorial Day Record

As expected, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End has taken the Memorial Day weekend record with an estimated Friday-Saturday-Sunday haul of $112,547,000, according to Buena Vista's Sunday estimate. That gives the movie a four day total of $126,547,000, including Thursday previews. While somewhat behind the early pace of Spider-Man 3, the long weekend and official start of the Summer vacation season will help Pirates catch up in the coming days, and we look set for a box office battle royale.

Pirates' three day performance is approximately $10 million ahead of the $102,750,665 earned by X-Men: The Last Stand last Memorial Day weekend. Last Stand actually beat Pirates on the corresponding Friday, which suggests that the new movie is putting in solid numbers through the weekend. A $25 million would leave At World's End with $150 million by Tuesday morning.

Shrek the Third and Spider-Man 3 are, predictably, in second and third place respectively. Both movies had somewhat disappointing weekends, however. Shrek has fallen approximately 58% from last weekend, suggesting that it's getting poor word of mouth. Spider-Man is down 53% and looks set to finish with around $350 million.
