International Details - Number Six for District Nine, Redux

October 25, 2009

The top five films on the international scene were published on Wednesday and can be found here.

District 9 returned to sixth place with $6.20 million on 2233 screens in 44 markets for a total of $77.12 million international and $192.36 million. The film opened in first place in South Korea with $1.60 million on 287 screens over the weekend and $1.88 million in total. On the other hand, it had to settle for second place in Brazil with $865,000 on 204 screens over the weekend for a total of $968,000 and Mexico wasn't as strong with $666,000 on 250 screens, but that was still enough for second place. The film still has a couple markets left to open in, but none are major markets. This will make it hard to reach $100 million internationally, but it could make to $200 million worldwide by this time next week.

  • Le Petit Nicolas fell out of the top five but still earned $5.63 million on 654 screens in 3 markets for a total of $26.01 million. In France the film made $5.97 million on 605 screens over the full week for a total of $24.87 million after three.
  • The Final Destination reached $100 million over the weekend with $5.44 million on 1675 screens in 44 markets for a total of $100.70 million. The film opened in first place in Australia with $1.93 million on just 90 screens while it struggled in Japan with just $588,000 on 98 screens, which was only enough for sixth place. The film opens in Spain next week, Brazil next month, and Italy next year, so it is far from done.
  • Fame earned $5.21 million on 2041 screens in 26 markets for a total of $34.87 million internationally to go with its $21.80 million domestically.
  • Agora landed in 10th place internationally with $4.94 million on 478 screens in Spain over the weekend, which was enough for first place in that market and $16.77 million after two weeks of release.
  • Blue opened in 11th place with $4.68 million on 988 screens in 17 markets, which is good for an Indian film.
  • Männerherzen slipped to second place in Germany with $3.89 million on 591 screens over the weekend for a total of $10.57 million after two. Internationally it made $4.48 million on 689 screens in 3 markets for a total of $12.14 million.
  • The Message landed in 13th place with $3.96 million on 546 screens in 3 markets for a total of $27.28 million, which is great for a Chinese film.
  • Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs slipped a spot to 14th with $3.67 million on 1734 screens in 30 markets for a total of $35.41 million internationally. There were no major market openings this past weekend, but that changes this weekend, and it should climb higher on the charts.
  • Surrogates collapsed, again, falling to 15th place with $3.57 million on 2182 screens in 28 markets for a total of $47.11 million. The film opens in France next week, while it still has major market openings all the way till early next year. That said, it will be hard for the movie to show a profit given its box office struggles and its hefty production budget.
  • Vicky the Viking fell to 16th place with $3.34 million on 1297 screens in 4 markets for a total of $49.43 million after six weeks of release. This includes $36.66 million in Germany, where it remained in third place this past weekend with $2.36 million on 807 screens.
  • The Founding Of A Republic set a record with $2.89 million on 475 screens in 4 markets for a total of $60.64 million. It became the first Chinese film to reach $60 million in its native market, while there is a sequel already in the works with a reported tentative title, The Founding of a Party.
  • Gambling Apocalypse Kaiji remained in first place in Japan with $2.61 million on 306 screens for a total of $11.05 million.
  • All the Best struggled with just $2.46 million on 723 screens in 15 markets. It was strong in India after a slow start, but weak elsewhere.
  • Orphan returned to the chart in 20th place with $2.38 million on 1045 screens in 21 markets for a total of $27.07 million. It opened in Spain but only managed fourth place with $1.06 million on 264 screens while it flopped in Italy with just $509,000 on 156.
  • Julie & Julia remained in 21st place with $2.37 million on 940 screens in 31 markets for a total of $16.23 million. The film opened in a number of markets last weekend, but most with of the smaller variety. The film does open in Italy with weekend, while it has yet to debut in Brazil, Mexico, Spain, and Japan.
  • Nefes: Vatan Sagolsun opened in first place in Turkey and 22nd place internationally with $1.97 million on 319 screens. It has been a while since we've seen a Turkish film chart, which is not surprising as it is not entirely common for a film to make $2 million in total in that market.
  • Pandorum entered the top 30 for the first time with $1.88 million on 913 screens in 14 markets for a total of $4.62 million. In Russia the film managed second place with $1.22 million on 420 screens, which is respectable for that market, but little more.
  • Zombieland fell to 24th place with $1.87 million on 637 screens in 5 markets for a total $6.88 million. It was down 54% in the U.K. to $939,000 on 302 screens over the weekend and $3.81 million after two. Meanwhile in Russia it was down only 40% to $972,000 on 330 screens over the weekend for a total of $3.13 million after two. This is an unusually strong hold for that market.
  • The Rebirth of Buddha opened in second place in Japan and 25th place internationally with $1.81 million on 192 screens.
  • Bangkok Transit System opened in first place in Thailand and 26th place internationally with $1.68 million on 143 screens.
  • The Girl Who Played With Fire fell to 27th place with $1.68 million on 387 screens in 6 markets for a total of $30.17 million after a month of release. This is an excellent run so far, but it still has a while to catch up to its predecessor.
  • The Proposal climbed into 28th place with $1.59 million on 859 screens in 18 markets over the weekend for a total of $149.04 million internationally and $312.85 million worldwide. It did open in Japan over the weekend, but with just $687,000 on 220 screens, it only managed fifth place and it won't last there very long.
  • The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus made its international debut in third place in the U.K. with $1.47 million on 265 screens, which is not a good portent for its debut here.
  • Mao's Last Dancer fell to 30th place internationally even has it remained in third in Australia with $1.43 million on 265 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.14 million after three.
