International Details - Enemies has a lot of International Friends
August 22, 2009
The top films on the international scene were published on Wednesday and can be found here.
Public Enemies remained in fifth place with $8.74 million on 2919 screens in 49 markets for a total of $76.20 million. The film opened in first place in Spain with $2.44 million on 460 screens, but had to settle for fifth in South Korea with $1.22 million on 375 screens over the weekend and $1.70 million in total. With Debuts in Italy and Japan still ahead, the film should have no trouble topping $100 million internationally and $200 million worldwide. However, it was a costly film to make, so it will have to show some strength on the home market to show a profit.
- The Hangover nearly climbed into the top five with $7.88 million on 2639 screens in 43 markets for a total of $139.29 million. The film won a close race for first place in Mexico with $1.40 million on 401 screens, but it was not as lucky in Spain opening in third place with $1.53 million on 318 screens. Meanwhile in Germany, the film climbed back into the top five with $1.36 million on 428 screens over the weekend for a total of $13.60 million after four weeks of release. The film has just about wrapped up its international run, and while it won't earn as much out there as it did here, it has already made $405.08 million worldwide and should end its run in the top 100 on the all-time chart. (Although I'm not sure how long it will stay there.)
- District 9 started its international run with releases in close to a dozen markets earning seventh place with $7.69 million on 803 screens in 10 markets. This includes a number one opening in Russia with $4.74 million on 453 screens. It had to settle for second place in Australia with $1.78 million on 178 screens; however, it was able to open in first place in neighboring New Zealand with $385,000 on 50 screens.
- G-Force opened in first place in Brazil with $1.17 million on 304 screens, which is a little more than what G.I.Joe opened with last weekend. Scary. Overall the movie made $6.38 million on 2250 screens in 17 markets for a total of $40.19 million internationally.
- Kaminey debuted in ninth place with $5.96 million on 1021 screens in 17 markets. It seems the Indian box office is starting to recover from its massive slump.
- The Proposal slipped a spot to tenth with $5.39 million on 2245 screens in 33 markets for a total of $102.31 million internationally. It became the first $100 million international hit for Sandra Bullock since Two Weeks Notice and will likely top Speed has her biggest hit worldwide before too long.
- Take Off climbed into first place in South Korea and 11th place internationally with $5.16 million on 563 screens over the weekend for a total of $22.08 million after three.
- Haeundae fell to second place in South Korea and 12th internationally with $4.89 million on 534 screens over the weekend and $50.33 million after four.
- Night At The Museum 2 returned to the chart in 13th place with $3.85 million on 743 screens in 7 markets for a total of $222.63 million. Its only opening of note was Japan where it led the way with $3.77 million on 625 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.71 million from Wednesday to Sunday.
- Sophie's Revenge opened in China with $3.65 million on 310 screens, which was enough for 14th place internationally.
- Aliens in the Attic made its international debut in 15th place with $3.62 million on 1261 screens in 8 markets over the weekend for a total of $5.09 million. The film did managed second place in the U.K. with $2.16 million on 435 screens, but it opened in fourth place in Spain with $883,000 on 324. The film earned third place in Italy, but with a very disappointing total of $257,000 on 205 screens.
- The Ugly Truth added $3.44 million on 704 screens in 5 markets to its still early total of $12.98 million. The film was down 59% during its second weekend in the U.K. falling from first to sixth with $1.32 million on 398 screens over the weekend for a total of $6.67 million after two. On the other hand, the film remained in first place in Australia with $1.87 million on 284 screens over the weekend for a total of $5.69 million, also after two.
- Neuilly Sa Mère! opened in second place in France and 17th place overall with $2.95 million on 391 screens.
- The Taking Of Pelham 1 2 3 is struggling internationally with $2.72 million on 1522 screens in 24 markets for a total of just $32.72 million after two month of release.
- The Time Traveler's Wife opened in first place in the U.K. with $2.34 million on 425 screens over the weekend, which was enough for 19th place internationally.
- Lopukhi debuted in second place in Russia and 20th place internationally with $2.34 million on 590 screens.
- Masked Rider Decade: Sinkenger fell 54% in Japan, which is awful for that market; about as common as a 70% drop-off is here. It did manage to hold onto third place there with $2.29 million on 345 screens, while it lifted its running tally to $12.63 million. This is the first part of the two-part installment of the Masked Rider franchise, and culturally speaking, the Japanese are not big fans of movies that don't have definitive endings, which could explain the film's decline.
- Hachiko - A Dog's Tale slipped to fourth in Japan with $2.27 million on 349 screens over the weekend for a total of $9.35 million after two.
- On His Majesty's Secret Service earned $2.11 million on 324 screens in 3 markets for a total of $14.30 million after three weeks of release.
