International Top of the Chart - Finding Salvation

June 17, 2009

Terminator Salvation remained in first place on the international chart with $44.88 million on 10,908 screens in 72 markets and now has $164.65 million internationally and $278.58 million worldwide. While it was an expensive movie to make, this is enough to ensure it will show a profit. It is just a matter of when. It could get there as early as its initial push into the home market, or it could have to wait until it starts playing on network TV, but it will get there. After it stumbled domestically, that was in doubt.

This weekend the film opened in Japan, taking first place with an outstanding $10.38 million on 697 screens, which was the best opening in that market over the past year. Over in nearby China the film managed an estimated $9 million on 1,671 screens, the second best opening for a non-Chinese film in that market.

As far as holdovers go, the film was able to remain in first place in Russia with $2.42 million on 762 screens over the weekend for a total of $12.38 million after two, while it spent the weekend on top of the Spanish box office with $1.46 million on 563 screens for a total of $7.15 million. However, in both cases it fell by a great amounts from its opening weekend (70% and 68% respectively). It fell even more in the U.K., down 72% to $3.19 million on 484 screens over the weekend for a total of $17.87 million after two. It held on a little better in Australia, down 64% to $1.86 million on 386 screens over the weekend and $8.92 million after two. Compared to that, it was solid in Germany, falling just 56% to $2.55 million on 730 screens over the weekend for a total of $10.01 million after two.

Even with these sharp declines, it will reach $300 million worldwide by the weekend, while it could reach $400 million worldwide in total.

Terminator Salvation earned twice as much as its nearest competitor, Night at the Museum - Battle for the Smithsonian, but we will get to that film, and the rest of the multi-million releases on Sunday.
