DVD Sales: The Toys are Back Indeed

November 23, 2010

Toy Story 3 remained on top of the sales chart this week with 934,000 units / $16.53 million for the week and 4.79 million units and $89.63 million after two. It is now the fourth-best-selling DVD of 2010 in terms of units and dollars, while it could climb another spot by the time Black Friday is over. The best-selling new release of the week was Grown Ups with 772,000 units / $15.43 million in sales during its opening week on the home market. This is not particularly good compared to its theatrical run, which suggests while a lot of people saw the movie in theaters, not a lot of them like it. Ramona and Beezus opened in third place with 357,000 units / $5.36 million, which is a much stronger result compared to its theatrical run. How to Train Your Dragon remained in the top five for the fifth week with 321,000 units / $5.26 million for the week lifting its running totals to 4.17 million / $87.19 million. It should get to 5 million units / $100 million before too long. Finally, The Karate Kid returned to the top five with 213,00 units / $2.88 million. After six weeks of release, it has sold 2.22 million units and generated $37.89 million in sales.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World just missed the top five, at least in terms of units sold with 190,000. In dollars it placed fifth with $3.42 million. At least it performed better on high definition. The next new release to chart was Charlie St. Cloud in eighth place with 175,000 units / $3.51 million. Further down the list we find Superman/Shazam!: The Return of Black Adam, which placed 14th with 65,000 units / $841,000.

Total Blu-ray sales took a particularly hard hit this past week, down almost 40% to $28.3 million, which was down almost 29% from the same weekend last year. Even worse, while DVD sales were also down, they were not down as much, resulting in the Blu-ray share dipping to 15%. Granted, this is still better than average for the year and there are some mitigating circumstances, but it's not good news.

Three of the four new first run releases that came out on Blu-ray were not exactly films that thrive on high definition with a comedy, drama, and a live-action kids movie. This left Toy Story 3 leading the way with 330,000 units sold during its second weekend of release. Grown Ups placed second with 240,000 units, which is about twice as many Blu-ray units as a film like this would have sold last year. The most interesting release of the week was Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, as it placed third with just a hair over 200,000. That's not a huge amount, but it is more than it sold on DVD, which is certainly worthy of attention. The other two day-and-date releases were Ramona and Beezus at 25,000 units and Charlie St. Cloud at under 20,000.
