DVD Sales: Hammering the Competition
September 27, 2011
TV on DVD dominated new releases with nine of them in the top 30 on this week's DVD sales chart. However, the number one release of the week was not TV on DVD, but Thor, which opened with 811,000 units / $14.53 million. That's the best debut since Rio, and it is likely this film will be even better on Blu-ray.
X-Men: First Class spent its first full week of release in second place with 530,000 units / $10.07 million for the week and 1.04 million units / $18.37 million in total. Barbie: Princess Charm School debuted in third place with 289,000 units / $3.71 million, further proving its one of the strongest DVD franchises around.
The rest of the top ten were TV on DVD releases making their home market debuts. The Big Bang Theory: Season Four placed fourth with 257,000 units / $7.69 million. Supernatural: Season Six earned fifth place with 182,000 units / $6.57 million. Glee: Season Two was the first of two releases from the series to chart this week, as it sold 168,000 units and generated $5.52 million during its first week of release. Grey's Anatomy: Season Seven placed seventh with 127,000 units / $4.07 million. Spartacus: Gods of the Arena earned eighth place with 116,000 units / $2.32 million. It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia: Season Six earned ninth place with 92,000 units / $2.16 million. The final film in the top ten was Glee: Season Two, Volume Two with 78,000 units / $1.91 million. Combined, the show would have placed fourth with 246,000 units and $7.43 million.
There are still more TV on DVD releases, as Rescue Me: Season Six opened in 14th place with 49,000 units sold and $980,000 in revenue. Finally, Camelot: Season One earned 18th place with 42,000 units / $1.14 million.
