Weekend Estimates: Transformers Unbeaten by Zookeeper, Horrible Bosses
July 10, 2011
Transformers: Dark of the Moon became the highest-grossing movie of the year so far, according to Paramount's Sunday estimate. Its total gross of $261 million is a comfortable $11 million ahead of The Hangover 2, which itself passed $250 million this weekend. While it couldn't come close to topping the chart, Horrible Bosses had a good weekend, earning a shade over $28 million and beating Zookeeper for 2nd place. The Kevin James comedy, meanwhile, posted a decent $21 million.
Revenue as a whole for the weekend is going to be down 15-20% from last year, and all eyes now turn to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II, which will give 2011 a much-needed boost next weekend, but will need to perform miracles to help this year significantly catch up with last, when the arrival of Inception provided a healthy boost to end-of-Summer revenues.
Limited releases continued to enjoy healthy business this weekend with Beat, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest topping the per-theater list with a spectacular $120,000 opening in just four theaters. Sholem Aleichem: Laughing in the Darkness also did great business with an estimated $18,000 in one theater.
