DVD Sales: Gnomeo Gnumber One

June 7, 2011

New releases took the top two spots on this week's DVD sales chart with Gnomeo and Juliet leading the way with 666,000 units sold while generating $10.74 million in opening week sales. This is not a bad result, for this time of year. I Am Number Four placed second with 462,000 units / $7.45 million during its opening week. Unless it was much stronger on Blu-ray, I don't think this will be enough to justify a sequel. Justin Bieber: Never Say Never fell from first to third, but with 202,000 units for the week, it was able to cross 1 million units it total. It now has DVD sales figures of 1.19 million units / $20.45 million. The Mechanic placed fourth with 176,000 units / $2.63 million for the week and 585,000 units / $8.82 million after two. Tangled rounded out the top five with 132,000 units / $1.84 million for the week, giving it total sales of 5.92 million units / $90.94 million after two months of release. At this pace, by as early as this time next week, it will become the first DVD of 2011 to reach 6 million units, while it should eventually reach $100 million in sales.

The Royal Wedding: William & Kate just missed the top five with 125,000 units / $684,000 in opening week sales. Lemonade Mouth debuted in eighth place with 120,000 units / $1.80 million, which is pretty good for a TV movie. The final new release to chart was Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Mickey's Great Outdoors with 65,000 units / $915,000, which was enough for 13th place. Any time a TV on DVD release aimed at preschoolers reaches the top 30, it's a good sign for that DVD in particular, and / or a bad sign for the overall DVD market in general. In this case, it's a little of both, but since it's summertime, the overall weakness is to be expected.
