"Genre Mashup" Movies
This is inarguably the most complicated subgenre, as nearly every film has elements of several genres. In order to fit in the genre mashup subgenre, a movie usually takes one of three paths. Firstly, it could combine two very disparate genres with very little crossover appeal and mash them together. For example, gory horror and opera were combined to create Repo! The Genetic Opera. Conversely, a film can try to cram as many different genres, as well as a couple of creative types, to make a movie that is almost unique, which is how we got Shanghai Noon, which is an action adventure, buddy comedy western. Finally, many anthology films fit into this subgenre, as these movies explore several subgenres of a particular genre. A single horror anthology movie could have short films in the supernatural horror, psychological horror, and survival horror subgenres.
