Synopsis

Back from a tour of duty, Kelli can't wait to rejoin her old life in the Rust Belt town in which she’s always lived. She's ready to experience the old feelings of everyday life - the carpet under her bare feet, a cold beer in front of the television, the smell of her baby’s head. But slowly, her world comes to feel unfamiliar. Her friends love her but seem preoccupied with trifles. Her children need more focused attention than she can give, and as much as he tries, her husband doesn't understand what she's been through. As Kelli's dislocation ripples through her world, she risks becoming an outsider. When she’s thrown back on her own resources Kelli has to struggle to find a new way forward.

Awards Season: Silver Linings for Limited Releases

November 28th, 2012

The Independent Spirit Awards has a special place in the Awards Season. The nominations are the unoffficial start of Awards Season, but the actual awards aren't given out until Oscar weekend, so they are the beginning at the end of Awards Season. They also help out a lot of limited releases that would otherwise not get enough buzz, although they are not so good at predicting Oscar wins. This year, two films tied for most nominations, Moonrise Kingdom and The Silver Linings Playbook, both of which earned five nominations. They weren't the only films to earn multiple nominations though. More...

Jazzing Up the Per Theater Chart

February 14th, 2012

Chico and Rita started its run on top of the per theater chart with $21,400 in one theater. Given its reviews and its Oscar nomination, it should have no trouble expanding at least somewhat. The overall number one film, The Vow, was in second place on the per theater chart with an average of $13,929. Safe House was close behind with $12,880. It's not too common for wide releases to earn more than $10,000 on the per theater chart at this time of year, so to have two of them do so on the same weekend is doubly impressive. The final film in the $10,000 club was Rampart with an average of $12,089. Like Chico and Rita it should expand for similar reasons. (I.E. Strong reviews and major nominations.) More...

Limited Releases run Rampart

February 10th, 2012

First of all, I'm equally proud and ashamed for making that pun in the title. Secondly, it's another Oscar week on the limited releases with three Oscars nominees on the list: Chico and Rita, In Darkness, and 2012 Oscar Shorts coming out. Additionally, while Rampart didn't earn any Oscar nods, it did pick up an Independent Spirit Award nomination, so there are some high quality movies to check out this week. More...
