Synopsis

If you ask today’s top comedians who their influences were, you’ll find the same names popping up repeatedly. Lenny Bruce, Don Rickles, Richard Pryor… and Bill Hicks. The legendary Texan outlaw comic was, and still is, an inspiration to millions. Bill’s rebellious and exhilarating comedy left no stone unturned, and his profound observations on America were a life-changing experience for many who saw him. The story of a son, a brother, and a friend, this film is told “in the round” by the family and peers who knew Hicks best, mixing in photographs that animate the scenes of his rollercoaster life with rare and previously unseen footage of his blistering comedy shows. It covers his precocious teenage years, his dark years of addiction, and goes all the way through his untimely death at 32.

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for June 7th, 2011

June 7th, 2011

The summer is usually a really weak time for home market releases, but this week is amazing. Not only are there two $100 million hits coming out on DVD / Blu-ray this week, but there are also half-a-dozen TV on DVD releases, a few limited releases, direct-to-DVD releases, and catalog titles, many of which are worth picking up, or even contenders for Pick of the Week. I tried to narrow the list of contenders down to one, but I couldn't do it. In the end I went with Leverage: Season Three on DVD and True Grit on Blu-ray / DVD Combo Pack as co-winners of the Pick of the Week. More...

Red Returns, But Blank also in the Black

April 12th, 2011

Red State continued its special engagement run earning $82,395 in one theater over the weekend. It has already earned $851,832 and will likely hit a major milestone, or two, before it has its official theatrical release. Blank City opened with $13,989 over the weekend and $21,412 since Wednesday, also in one theater. The Four Times was very, very close behind with $13,678 during its second weekend of release. Independent Spirit Award winner, Meek's Cutoff, was just able to grab a spot in the $10,000 club with an average of $10,021 in two theaters. More...

Limited Releases are Going Wild

April 8th, 2011

There are plenty of limited releases opening this weekend, including a few that are opening wider than usual. Unfortunately, most of the limited releases are either earning poor reviews, or are being ignored by critics. Fortunately, one of the widest releases of the weekend, Born to be Wild 3D, is also one of the films that is earning the best reviews of the week. More...
